Danube Delta Engelhartszell - Bucharest

Itinerary

Danube Delta Cruise
Routenkarte Donau Delta Engelhartszell Bukarest

This is the departure point for your Danube cruise. Our tip: to ensure that you get off to a relaxed start, travel the day before the cruise begins and spend the night at one of our partner hotels. This will allow you to explore the region around Passau, too. And when your ship sets sail for an exciting Danube cruise, you will have already enjoyed your first few adventures.

This is a real highlight of your Danube cruise: Vienna, the capital of Austria with that extra-special something. The locals sound as though they are singing when they speak, and it is customary for certain business owners to address their regular customers with their full title. That’s just the way things are done here. With its wealth of museums, galleries, palaces and castles, plus the state opera and many theatres, the city enjoys a lively cultural scene all year-round. The Viennese are proud of their city – and rightly so!

Thanks to the mild climate and the southern slope of the Mecsek mountain range, almonds, figs and sweet grapes grow perfectly in the region around Pécs , earning it the moniker in Hungary, The Mediterranean City. Pécs is also known for its fine porcelain, which is produced in the traditional Zsolnay factory. In 2010, Pécs was one of the European Capitals of Culture and awaits you with interesting sights and an elegant city centre. With this many assets, it is not surprising that even the great religions settled here and made their mark on the city’s architecture: the former Turkish mosque is the largest in Central Europe, the magnificent cathedral is home to a stunning panelled ceiling and the synagogue is one of the most beautiful in Hungary.

Natur im Donau Delta entdecken

The town of Sulina lies at the heart of the Danube Delta. This is where the Danube flows into the Black Sea, and no other stop on this cruise will bring you this close to the coast. Sulina used to be prosperous and was home to people of many different nationalities, but things are very different now. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, Sulina’s importance dwindled. Present-day Sulina still shows traces of its communist past: explore its history during your visit!

Sulina is the only town inside the Romanian part of the Danube Delta at the mouth of the Sulina branch of the Danube, where the river flows into the Black Sea. This town isn’t part of the Romanian road network, so it can only be accessed from the water. Sulina was once a major seaport, but its importance began to dwindle in the 20th century. During a walking tour you’ll see traces of the town’s maritime heyday and you’ll also enjoy the view over the town from the lighthouse.

Giurgiu (Bucharest)

Arr 07:00 pm

Bucharest – Romania’s capital – is a city of fascinating contrasts. Beautiful boyar houses compete with concrete walls and glass facades, while straight avenues morph into winding streets. Bucharest is characterised by a constant contrast between poverty and prosperity. Having been under dictatorial rule during its time as a socialist republic, it still seems to be in need of regeneration today. But in spite of this, it’s still a city you can fall in love with.
