Rhine Gourmet Cooks

Itinerary

Rhine Gourmet Cooks
Rheinkreuzfahrt Gourmetköchinnen

We will set off on our exciting Rhine cruise from here, heading for the northern or the southern Rhine. But you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to explore this cathedral city, with its wealth of monuments and attractions. The best way is to arrive the day before your cruise departs, so that you can relax – or simply extend your stay in Cologne after the cruise has ended.

During this city walk you will learn about Willem Schouten, who sailed around the southern tip of America in 1616, and named it after his home town. Another famous man from Hoorn was Abel Janszoon Tasman, who was the first European to visit both New Zealand and Tasmania. During the tour, you will be able to see the picturesque harbour, the Grote Kerk, the old town hall or the Waage from 1609.

Edam is famous around the word for its cheese, but there’s more to see and experience here. You’ll go on a short walk to explore this small town, which is criss-crossed with many little canals, and take in several sights including the Cheese Market. Although there isn’t much cheese sold here nowadays, the old traditions are revived regularly and local cheese is transported to different sellers on sledges, just like in days gone by. You’ll have a little free time in the town centre before you continue on to Katwoude. Here, you’ll find a charming organic farm right next to the IJsselmeer dyke. The damp meadows of the polder landscape provide the perfect conditions for the cows that produce the all-important milk for the local cheese. You’ll learn how this cheese is made – and have the opportunity to taste a few different varieties.

Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam. Known as ‘Manhattan on the Maas’, it has a more urban, international atmosphere than anywhere else in the whole country. In recent years, Rotterdam has become a centre for architecture – its large architect-designed houses testament to the city’s modernity. With a little luck, you’ll see other cruise ships during your day in Rotterdam, since Europe’s largest maritime port is a major transport hub.

Experience some of Rotterdam’s various highlights – both 185 metres from the ground and 6 metres below sea level. Rotterdam is fascinating on all levels. After a short bus tour through the newer part of the city, you’ll scale the dizzy heights of the Euromast tower. Standing 185 metres tall, it was built for the Floriade exhibition in 1960. From the 112-metre-high observation deck you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view across the modern skyline and the harbour. On a clear day it’s possible to look out across the North Sea. From up here you can venture even higher by taking the rotating glass lift, called the Euroscoop, up to 185 metres. Once you’re back on the ground, the tour will continue, taking in the beautifully designed and cutting-edge market hall building, which has proven very popular with visitors since it opened in 2014. Here you’ll have the opportunity to sample typical Dutch specialities including herring, cheese, genever and traditional syrup waffles. Afterwards there’ll be time for you to explore on your own before you are taken back to the ship.

Did you know that Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands? You only need to cross the Waalburg arch bridge into the centre to understand why the 160,000 inhabitants are so proud of their city: the Waalkade wharf and the silhouette of the city-centre buildings combine to form a truly impressive sight. In this Hanseatic city, tradition and modernity go hand in hand. Discover this wonderful spot directly from your A-ROSA ship during your Rhine cruise.

The Hanseatic city of Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands. Its history goes back to Roman times. Later, the city repeatedly became the imperial residence (during the Carolingian period), as well as a part of the Hanseatic League. In 1678, the Treaty of Peace of Nijmegen between France and the Netherland was signed here. The central old town is especially worth a visit today. You will explore the old town during this guided city walk, where you will also see the St. Stevenskerk, the Belvedère, the Latijnse School and the Grote Markt.
