Rhine in Flames Ruedesheim

Itinerary

Rhine cruise
Routenkarte Rhein in Flammen Ruedesheim

We will set off on our exciting Rhine cruise from here, heading for the northern or the southern Rhine. But you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to explore this cathedral city, with its wealth of monuments and attractions. The best way is to arrive the day before your cruise departs, so that you can relax – or simply extend your stay in Cologne after the cruise has ended.

Mainz bleibt Mainz (or ‘Mainz is always Mainz’) is more than a carnival motto. It is an expression of the easy-going way of life that makes the locals proud of their city, makes it easy for non-locals to settle in and helps visitors to enjoy their stay here. With 2,000 years of history, Mainz is not just one of the oldest cities in Germany – it is also a place where you can see history come alive wherever you turn.

The cheerful Carnival City of Mainz has a long history. Our excursion takes you to the historic treasures, such as St. Martin's Cathedral. Built in the 10th century, it is Mainz's landmark and impresses visitors with its opulent interior. Afterwards the tour takes you to the former Holy Spirit Hospital from the 13th century and to the Old University. It was built as a Jesuit College between 1615 and 1618 and still houses various institutes today. Johannes Gutenberg, one of Mainz's most famous sons, invented the printing press in the 15th century.

Today your Rhine river cruise will call at Strasbourg – a centre of European policymaking. With its medieval half-timbered houses and its elegant city palaces, Strasbourg really stands out from the crowd. But the highlight is the cathedral. From its viewing platform, the city’s half-timbered houses appear as small as pieces from a model railway set. Enjoy your day in the French part of the Rhine region!

In 1931 the French writer Georges Duhamel described Colmar as the most beautiful city in the world. And there’s no denying that the self-proclaimed capital of Alsatian wine is a real gem. During a walking tour you’ll see architectural masterpieces spanning six centuries. The houses in the picturesque quarters such as Little Venice – the tanners’ district – are particularly attractive. After the tour you’ll have some time to explore on you own.

Aber das ist längst nicht alles, wie Sie beim Stadtbummel feststellen werden. Die mit Fresken verzierten historischen Häuser in der Altstadt sind ein Traum. During your cruising day, enjoy watching the scenery drift by as you look forward to the next towns and cities. Our tip: the SPA-ROSA is a great place to unwind and pamper yourself during your day on the river.

The town describes its biggest attraction, the world-famous Drosselgasse, as ‘144 metres of joie de vivre’. This centre of Rhine Romanticism once inspired poets and musicians – it was here that Brahms composed his Symphony No. 3. Rüdesheim is the best-known spot in the Rheingau and has plenty of cultural attractions, including stately homes and fortifications. And no visit to the towns and countryside of this area of the Rhine would be complete without a Rüdesheim coffee, which was invented here.

Let the Winzerexpress take you on a tour through vineyards and right into the centre of Rüdesheim. Here, the little lanes are too narrow for our trusty vehicle, so you’ll explore the old town on foot. You’ll find one of Germany’s most well-known streets here: Drosselgasse. Lined with wine taverns and bars with outdoor seating, it offers 144 metres of pure enjoyment. You’ll have the opportunity to stop off here to learn how the traditional coffee speciality ‘Rüdesheim coffee’ is made – and you’ll be able to try it for yourself, of course.

Since the 14th century, the impressive Rheinstein Castle has sat perched on a cliff, towering over the Rhine and one of the most treacherous narrow areas of the waterway: the Bingen Hole. In the carefully restored castle complex, described as the most beautiful private castle on the Middle Rhine, precious stained-glass windows, wall and ceiling paintings, antique furniture, armour, a castle chapel with a crypt and romantic gardens await you. You’ll travel to the castle by bus and ferry, learning everything you need to know on the way. Once at the castle, you can explore its secret nooks and crannies and discover its beautiful works of art individually – and also enjoy the view across the Rhine.
