Rhine in Flames St. Goar

Itinerary

Rhine Cruise
Routenkarte Rhein in Flammen St. Goar

We will set off on our exciting Rhine cruise from here, heading for the northern or the southern Rhine. But you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to explore this cathedral city, with its wealth of monuments and attractions. The best way is to arrive the day before your cruise departs, so that you can relax – or simply extend your stay in Cologne after the cruise has ended.

Boppard

Arr 06:00 am Dep 04:30 pm

The imperial town of Boppard is located close to the narrow horseshoe bend of the Rhine. In the 4th century the Romans replaced their citadel by a stone fortress with 28 towers, which however was soon overrun by Germanic tribes. The former free imperial city was subjugated in 1327 by the elector Balduin von Trier. Balduin immediately had the electoral Trier castle built, thereby forcing the uncooperative inhabitants to accept his rule.

The picturesque wine-growing town of Boppard is situated in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Even the Romans settled here. Today the town is not only known for its historical architecture, but also for its finest Riesling wine. The tour takes you to the medieval noble courts, the Roman fort, the Electoral Castle, the majestic Church of St. Severus and the beautiful Carmelite Church built around 1300.

St. Goar

Mainz bleibt Mainz (or ‘Mainz is always Mainz’) is more than a carnival motto. It is an expression of the easy-going way of life that makes the locals proud of their city, makes it easy for non-locals to settle in and helps visitors to enjoy their stay here. With 2,000 years of history, Mainz is not just one of the oldest cities in Germany – it is also a place where you can see history come alive wherever you turn.

The vibrant carnival city of Mainz has a long history. This tour will introduce you to wonderful old treasures such as Saint Martin’s Cathedral. Erected in the 10th century, it is the city’s main landmark, and visitors come here to marvel at its elaborate decor. You’ll also see the 13th-century Heilig-Geist-Spital, a former public hospital, and the Domus Universitatis, or ‘Old University’. Built between 1615 and 1618 as a Jesuit college, the Old University still houses various institutes today. Johannes Gutenberg, the city’s most famous son, invented the printing press here in the 15th century. At the Gutenberg Museum you’ll learn about the history of printing, books and text up close and see two original Gutenberg Bibles.

It’s true that Dr Carl Benz invented the automobile, but it was his wife Bertha Benz who proved that it was fit for purpose when she completed the first long-distance drive in 1888. This led to Carl Benz’s invention becoming the first commercially available automobile – not using horses – in the world. This interesting walking tour takes you to places that played a key role in Carl Benz’s work. You’ll also be given fascinating insights into his groundbreaking discovery, since the Benz family had to overcome a series of obstacles before they were able to sell the first automobile.

Discover Koblenz during your Rhine cruise. Its history dates back over 2,000 years, making it one of Germany’s oldest cities – and one of its most picturesque, with a wealth of sights and cultural attractions. Marvel at Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, grand townhouses, narrow lanes and romantic corners. And watch as our A-ROSA ship sails close to the famous Deutsches Eck headland.

The breath-taking cable car ride across the Rhine and up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress should not be missed: Behind you the roofs of Koblenz, below you the broad river and in front of you the gigantic fortress Ehrenbreitstein. This adjective is by no means an exaggeration, as you will be entering the second largest preserved fortress in Europe. Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III ordered the construction as part of an anti-French military line. Up to 6,500 craftsmen and day labourers were employed. The mighty fortress rises 118 metres above the Rhine and was once the core of the fortification around Koblenz. Together with the Deutsches Eck, it forms the northern gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Afterwards we will walk through the old town back to the ship.
