Romance on Rhine & Moselle 2023

The Rüdesheimer Berg is home to several of Germany's best vineyards. Between Riesling and Burgundy, you will walk through the idyllic mountains with a wonderful view over the Rhine Valley and the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley. During the guided tour you will be able to update your knowledge of winemaking. We will end the tour with a wine tasting of five different wines from the barrels of a local winegrower.

Let the Winzerexpress take you on a tour through vineyards and right into the centre of Rüdesheim. Here, the little lanes are too narrow for our trusty vehicle, so you’ll explore the old town on foot. You’ll find one of Germany’s most well-known streets here: Drosselgasse. Lined with wine taverns and bars with outdoor seating, it offers 144 metres of pure enjoyment. You’ll have the opportunity to stop off here to learn how the traditional coffee speciality ‘Rüdesheim coffee’ is made – and you’ll be able to try it for yourself, of course.

Walk along the Rhine into the picturesque old town of Mainz with its half-timbered houses. Visit the outstanding Mainz Cathedral St. Martin, the Gutenberg Museum or the Heunensäule. Mainz has a lot to offer in terms of historical buildings and monuments, which you can discover on a walk with your private English-speaking guide.

The tranquil little town of Lahnstein lies directly at the mouth of the Lahn. The history of the town dates back to Roman times. The town's landmark, Lahneck Castle, was built in the 13th century. Also worth seeing is the very well preserved town hall from the 15th century and parts of the town wall. Explore this idyllic little town on a leisurely walk and pass the Salhofplatz with its Hexentrum and visit the Hospital Chapel with its pilgrims' grave.

The spectacular scenery, the romantic vineyards and the passing Moselle invite you to a cosy wine tasting in Cochem. The Haxel Winery welcomes you with a young and dynamic wine estate. Sample the delicious wines at a wine tasting and learn all about the philosophy of the winery, as well as how the wines are made.

The second smallest county seat in Germany is one of the most beautiful cities in the Moselle Valley. Cochem’s long history is revealed during a tour of the old town. You walk past the Capuchin monastery, the parish church of St. Martin and the town hall from the 17th century. Mini busses will take you up 100 metres to the imperial castle, which is one of the most beautiful castles in the region. The tour takes you through the neo-Renaissance and neo-Baroque designed rooms with valuable furnishings.

Join us to the traditional winery of Ebernach Monastery and taste the honest and characterful Riesling wines from the steep slope. During a short walk you will discover the monastery garden and receive exciting explanations about the work of the winegrower. Afterwards, you will take part in a wine tasting and be convinced of the taste of the different wines.

Trier - one of Germany’s oldest cities - is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city was founded around 16 BC by Emperor Augustus and you will find numerous architectural monuments from this period. From the ship, you will drive along the Moselle, past old Moselle cranes and monastery complexes, to the oldest bridge in Germany, the Roman Bridge. In the footsteps of the Romans, you will then explore the amphitheatre, the ruins of Barbara thermal baths, as well as the throne room of Emperor Constantine the Great. We will then pass the Palace of the Electorate from the 18th century before reaching the city's main landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Porta Nigra.

In Trier you can find 8 of the 46 German UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Such a concentration is unique and there is a lot to explore in the old Roman city. If you prefer to stroll around individually, you may take the transfer bus from the berth directly to the city centre, where you will have ample time to discover the beauty of the old Roman city. After a three hour stay we will take you back to the A-ROSA cruise ship in Mehring.

Two rivers on your trip are not enough? Then come along on the beautiful panoramic drive to the famous Saar Loop. Enjoy the drive through the multifaceted nature park starting near Mehring, with its extensive woodlands, species-rich meadows, the river and stream valleys and the characteristic rock formations. As soon as you reach the viewpoint at the Saar Loop, you will realise why this is supposed to be Germany's most beautiful river loop. After a short stop and walk, your route continues through the nature park back to Trier Mehring.

Join us for a private wine tasting in Bernkastel-Kues in the heart of the Moselle region. The Moselle region is Germany's oldest wine region and is home to the steepest vineyard in the world. Take a leisurely walk along the Moselle, past the vineyards, to the Thanisch winery. The family-run winery welcomes you warmly with a glass of sparkling wine and provides you with detailed explanations about the winery and the wine itself. The vineyards of Bernkastel-Kues are ideal for a wine walk.While you hike along the romantic vineyards, past wonderful vantage points, you will receive interesting information about the Moselle region and, of course, you are also allowed to taste the wine. At the oldest castle ruins in Germany, the Landshut castle ruins, you will make a short stop and take a guided tour of the castle. Afterwards you hike through the idyllic Bernkastler Schweiz back to the ship.

Bernkastel-Kues has been blessed twice: once with fertile vineyards and once by perhaps the most unique ensemble of medieval half-timbered buildings. Especially famous for the Spitzhäuschen, which has been balancing on a foundation that appears to be much too narrow since the beginning of the 15th century. It is a true wonder that it has not fallen over yet! The Renaissance city hall, built in 1608, and the Michaela fountain in the market square are just as remarkable as the parish church of St. Michael with its more than 600-year-old tower.

The breath-taking cable car ride across the Rhine and up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress should not be missed: Behind you the roofs of Koblenz, below you the broad river and in front of you the gigantic fortress Ehrenbreitstein. This adjective is by no means an exaggeration, as you will be entering the second largest preserved fortress in Europe. Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III ordered the construction as part of an anti-French military line. Up to 6,500 craftsmen and day labourers were employed. The mighty fortress rises 118 metres above the Rhine and was once the core of the fortification around Koblenz. Together with the Deutsches Eck (German Corner), it forms the northern gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Afterwards we will walk through the old town back to the ship.

The excursion begins with the landmark of the city: the monumental Kaiser Wilhelm monument at the Deutsches Eck (German Corner).
