PANORAMA TOUR THROUGH THE TAUNUS(approx. 4.5 h)
The Taunus counts as a local recreation area for one of Germany's largest metropolises. On a tranquil panoramic drive, the route takes you past places like Kronberg and Königstein and along the Taunus High Road to the Feldberg, the highest peak in the region. You will then drive through picturesque climatic health resorts to the romantic Weintal valley and the Hessenpark, where you will briefly stop to visit a reconstructed historic market square. The journey continues towards the Saalburg Roman fort and Bad Homburg before returning to Frankfurt.
NUREMBERG, THE CAPITAL OF FRANCONIA(approx. 3.5 h)
The bus ride from the ship’s mooring point to the centre of Bavaria’s second-largest city takes a few minutes. Nuremberg’s principal landmark – the distinctive Imperial Castle – towers above the city, dominating its skyline. This castle, where all of the Holy Roman Emperors from 1050 to 1571 stayed at one time or another, is one of the most important imperial palaces of the Middle Ages. Your tour will begin with a bus transfer into the centre of Nuremberg. The old town has retained its character despite having sustained heavy damage in World War Two. During a walking tour you’ll see sights such as the medieval city walls – one of the most important fortifications in Europe – plus the churches of Saint Lawrence and Saint Sebald. The Handwerkerhof (craftsmen’s courtyard) offers traditional handicrafts and Franconian hospitality against a charming backdrop.
HISTORIC PAPER MILL AND IRON HAMMER (approx. 3.5 h)
About 15 minutes from Wertheim lies a museum of a special kind. The Kurtz Ersa Hammer Museum impresses not only with its historic building, but also with its show forge. Here you can see an impressive demonstration of how iron hammers are traditionally forged. The only iron hammer still in operation in the Spessart region is a piece of industrial history. Afterwards, drive to Homburg, 15 kilometres away, and visit another traditional craft there - a historic paper mill. Here, too, the building alone is impressive with its beautiful half-timbering. Inside, you will discover how close living and working were to each other in the production of paper and which work steps were involved.
MARIENBERG FORTRESS AND WÜRZBURG'S OLD TOWN (approx. 3.5 h)
On this excursion you will first discover the old town during a city walk. Afterwards a bus will take you up to the Marienberg Fortress, the widely visible and prominent landmark of Würzburg. Originally, the fortress served as a Celtic refuge castle which was built around 704. Later, the first church of Würzburg was built here and in the early 13th century the first fortified castle was added, which was rebuilt several times during the Renaissance and Baroque time.
