We recommend that you begin your excursion by sampling some delicious calissons d’Aix, local sweets made with almonds and melon. Preferably in one of the many cafés along the elegant Cours Mirabeau. Or you could follow in the footsteps of Paul Cézanne, the great Impressionist artist, who had a studio in Aix. The multifaceted Vienne was once an important Roman city and, thanks to its location on the Rhône, the gateway to the heart of France. A number of ancient buildings from this period can still be seen today. For example, there is a Roman theatre, which is still used for events such as the summer jazz festival. There is also a very well preserved Roman temple in Vienne, surrounded by an impressive portico.

Let´s go to Gaul! Founded by Julius Caesar over 2,000 years ago, Vienne became the second capital of southern Gaul during the Roman Empire, and temporary imperial residence. Numerous monuments such as the Temple of Augustus and Livia, the garden of the Cybele and an antique theatre are still witnesses to the riches of this period. Also worth a visit are the Tour des Valois with its Romanesque-Gothic Saint-Maurice cathedral with a huge flamboyant window which is located opposite to the city's other sights. From the 4th century until the end of the 18th century it was the seat of the archbishop.
