For us, 2022 was a very special year, because we were celebrating our 20th anniversary! Over 20 years ago, the first A-ROSA ships started their service. Since then, we have developed river cruises to what they can be: city-nature-culinary-active-adventure-wellness-romance-family cruises. Come with us on our time travel through the A‑ROSA history!
APRIL 2002
CAST OFF!
The Danube represents a very special destination for us, because this is where the story of A‑ROSA began: In 2002, A‑ROSA BELLA and her sister ship, A‑ROSA DONNA, embarked on the very first A‑ROSA cruises on the Danube. After the christening on April 05, 2002 in Rostock, both were brought "piggyback" on a large cargo ship all the way to the Black Sea, from where they set out on their maiden voyage.

Deutsche Seerederei
Shortly after the launch of the first two Danube ships, the company was purchased by the Deutsche Seereederei in 2003.

THE FLEET IS GROWING
The Danube cruises are so popular that A‑ROSA is launching two new ships: A‑ROSA MIA and A‑ROSA RIVA. Therefore, the original duo soon turned into a real fleet, visiting Europe's most beautiful metropolises – with still many more plans for the future.

NEW STARS ABOVE RHÔNE & SÂONE
In 2005, the Rhône was introduced as a new cruise region, on which A‑ROSA STELLA and A‑ROSA LUNA have been sailing ever since. LUNA, the moon, and STELLA, the star - you couldn't ask for more fitting travel companions through sunny Southern France.

A GUEST AT FATHER RHINE'S
In 2009, A‑ROSA AQUA was the first to cruise parts of the Rhine, opening up another cruise region. Since then, our guests have been discovering everything the Rhine has to offer - wild landscapes, hidden castles, romantic villages and lively cities, half-timbered houses and modern architecture.

NEWCOMERS ON THE RHINE
After A‑ROSA VIVA, BRAVA and SILVA joined the fleet, the entire river – from the Rhine Falls to the estuary – was soon discovered.

NEW FACES
In 2013, Jörg Eichler joined us as the managing director. The management team consists of Jörg Eichler, Chief Executive Officer, and Markus Zoepke, Chief Operating Officer. Both are also shareholders in the company. Another person comes on board in 2014: Yvonne Catterfeld is the new brand ambassador for A‑ROSA. With A‑ROSA FLORA and ALVA, the singer and actress is nowadays the godmother of already two A‑ROSA ships.

CRUISING DIFFERENTLY WITH A-ROSA FLORA
With A-ROSA FLORA, our second suite ship was introduced in 2014. In the up to 29m2 big cabins, guests can enjoy the exclusive suite service, which includes room service, early check-in and a welcome champagne.

EXCITING INNOVATIONS
Transfer, drinks, spa treatment and more? With the Premium All-Inclusive fare, A-ROSA introduces its popular all-round carefree rate in 2014, which still delights guests today. At the same time, the family cruises with a kids club on board are also carried out for the first time. This makes A-ROSA the first provider of kids entertainment and special cabins for families.

SAVOIR-VIVRE WITH A-ROSA VIVA
Paris ahead! A-ROSA VIVA changes her home port and so we are finally headed to the perhaps most beautiful metropolis in Europe on the equally beautiful Seine. Bonjour!

DUKE STREET
In February 2018, the British financial investor Duke Street purchased the shares of A-ROSA Flussschiff GmbH.

A‑ROSA guests have waited a long time for the Douro. And it was worth it: The Douro spoils us with culture and nature - A‑ROSA ALVA with everything else.

SHINING IN NEW SPLENDOUR
A‑ROSA DONNA got a new look in 2019 and was completely refurbished. Both the public areas - restaurant, lobby, atrium, lounge bar and sun deck - and the cabins were redesigned. As with other A‑ROSA ships, a separate culinary area was also created: the A‑ROSA Stüberl.

HYBRID POWER AHEAD!
With A‑ROSA SENA, we not only sail the Northern Rhine, but also completely new waters: E‑Motion. A‑ROSA SENA has a hybrid propulsion system with battery storage, which enables docking in ports with almost no local emissions.

A-ROSA ADDS TWO NEW SHIPS TO THE FLEET
A‑ROSA ALEA and A‑ROSA CLEA have been sailing the Rhine since April 2024.
2025
Rolf-Dieter Maltzahn is appointed CEO of A-ROSA
Rolf-Dieter Maltzahn is appointed CEO of A-ROSA Flussschiff GmbH in February 2025. The A-ROSA product becomes even more flexible in the 2025 season with the introduction of the Premium Plus drinks package and other add-on services.
