Highlights on the Douro

Porto
Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, boasts numerous impressive sights. The old town of Ribeira, for example, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is very impressive with its narrow streets and colourful houses along the waterfront. The Dom Luís I Bridge offers a spectacular view and connects Porto with the wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. Porto's cathedral, the Sé, and the magnificent Livraria Lello library are among the most significant landmarks. Other highlights of the city include the Palácio da Bolsa with its impressive Arab Hall and a visit to the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves. On top of all that, the welcoming and friendly people of Porto make it an unforgettable destination along the Douro.

Régua
As early as the 18th century, the town played a central role in the production and trade of port wine, which was once transported from here down the Douro River on traditional sailing vessels. Nestled in a valley shaped by centuries of winemaking, the town lies along the scenic banks of the Douro – so picturesque that the Alto Douro wine region was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. A highlight in the surrounding area is the "Stairway to Heaven" in Lamego: a stunning baroque staircase with 686 steps leading up to the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Another must-see is the Mateus Palace in Vila Real, a baroque architectural gem surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens. In the heart of Régua, the Douro Museum offers fascinating insights into the history and culture of the region.

Pinhão
Pinhão is a hidden gem in the heart of Portugal’s wine country and a must-visit for anyone exploring the Douro Valley. Renowned for its beautiful azulejos – traditional Portuguese tiles that illustrate scenes of grape harvesting and life in the Douro valley – the town is also perfectly situated for visiting some of the region’s finest port wine estates. For those seeking more than just relaxation, Pinhão offers a variety of hiking trails that wind through the vineyards and along the river. These scenic routes provide not only a peaceful connection to nature, but also countless photo-worthy views of the surrounding landscape.

Vega de Terrón
Vega de Terrón, a small village nestled within the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, lies at the confluence of the Águeda and Douro rivers, forming the natural border between Portugal and Spain. This remarkable protected area is rich in diverse flora and fauna, offering nature lovers a peaceful retreat. Nearby, the historic city of Salamanca draws visitors with its prestigious university and grand landmarks such as the Plaza Mayor. In Vega de Terrón itself, the scenic riverside promenade invites leisurely walks, while local restaurants serve up authentic Spanish cuisine and regional wines. Whether you're looking to hike through unspoiled landscapes or explore cultural treasures, Vega de Terrón has something to offer for every traveller.
