Highlights of the Danube River Cruise

A world of wonder created by nature and humans.

From Passau to Wachau, Bratislava, Ilok, Belgrade, Cruising Day, Rousse, Oltenita (Bucharest), Cernavoda, Constanța, Oltenita (Bucharest), Giurgiu (Bucharest), Cruising Day, Turnu Severin, Cataracts, Novi Sad, Ilok, Cruising Day, Budapest, Vienna and Wachau to Passau.

Humming soft waltz melodies, you stand on the deck, your thoughts back in imperial Vienna. Suddenly, however, you hear the strains of wild Balkan violin music and the vibrating background noise of city hustle and bustle. The Danube, the queen of rivers, has carried you further along her course. Incredible panoramic landscapes and fascinating city views of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest line up like pearls on a string. These views tell tales of Romans and emperors, wars and cosmopolitanism. Famous monasteries on the banks of the river show what faith in God has driven humans to achieve. The Baroque architecture in the streets of the Danube cities make Germany’s historical apartment buildings seem positively spartan by comparison. But then all man-made creations reverently take a back seat, as it is nature’s turn to shine: in the awe-inspiring “Iron Gates” of the Carpathian Mountains, for example, or the mysterious Danube Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Get ready for a true voyage to different worlds.

View from a river cruise ship of the vegetated rocky landscape in the Danube Delta. In the foreground is a railing and behind it the quiet river.

Danube Delta

“Iron Gates” is probably the most awe-inspiring gorge in Europe. In the past, this stretch of the Danube spelled disaster for many a ship. However, the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in 1971 resulted in a rise in the water level. This means that today we can enjoy the view of the huge canyon leading directly to “Romania’s answer to Norway”. The steep, green-covered cliffs of the Carpathian Mountains rise up to the left and right; the deep blue water flows below; and beyond every bend in the river there is another reason to take out your camera.

Blick auf ein Dorf in der Wachau mit der Donau, umgeben von grünen Hügeln und Weinbergen, unter bewölktem Himmel.

Wachau

Around 80 kilometres west of Vienna is the Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This valley is lined with steep slopes on which some of Europe’s best grape varieties grow. In the midst of all this, you’ll keep spotting castles, palaces and Romantic ruins on the hills, which bear witness to a distant past. With such an enchanted landscape, it’s not surprising that there are many legends about the Wachau, dealing with both mythical phenomena and real-life events, including the Napoleonic Wars. Authors such as Josef Wichner and Hans Plöckinger published collections of these legends – the ideal thing to read while you are visiting the area.

Budapest

On one bank of the Danube is hilly Buda with its Fisherman’s Bastion and Castle Hill; on the other, there’s flat Pest with its House of Parliament. These two beautiful districts couldn’t be more different. Perhaps that’s why it took until 1873 for the two cities on opposite sides of the river to merge and form Budapest.

Bucharest

Slovakia’s capital is situated exactly at the point where the country meets Austria and Hungary. This makes it the only capital city in the world that borders more than one neighbouring country. Due to its location, Bratislava has been an ethnic melting pot since ancient times. This influence can be seen in every corner of the city.
