Highlights of the Danube River Cruise

Complete relaxation between towering cliffs and cultural highlights.

From Passau to Wachau, Vienna, Budapest, Kalocsa, Mohács, Vukovar, Belgrade, Cataracts, Novi Sad, Ilok, Cruising Day, Bratislava and Melk to Passau.

With a stroke of the bow, a violin begins to weep. The young, the artistic and business people sit beneath the golden ceiling of the Book Café in Budapest. This city of many influences is a place where people, culture and architecture come together to create a unique atmosphere. Visitors who dock in Belgrade will be able to smell peach trees and wood smoke as they make their way to the imposing fortress. They’ll also be able to try pljeskavica, a kind of burger served with cream cheese and flatbread. There’s more to Vienna than the Sissi Museum, the cathedral and Prater; there’s also an endless array of charming and innovative shops, cafés and museums. Plus, the Carpathian Mountains aren’t far away. First, though, you must pass through the “Iron Gates”. Looking on disapprovingly is a 40-m-high portrait carved into the cliffs of a king who ruled here until 106 A.D. The deep-blue water flows through the vertical cliffs of this mighty canyon, taking many a passenger’s breath away. The Wachau valley seems rather gentle by comparison. This area’s mild climate means that sun-kissed grapes can be grown to produce exquisite wines. This UNESCO World Heritage Site also boasts idyllic ruined castles and picturesque villages. A region for true connoisseurs.

Vienna

Once you've settled into Vienna for a few hours, you won't want to leave in a hurry. You want to visit the countless cafés, where the traditional Viennese coffee house culture is still lived today. And also the great history around the emperors, Sissi and the Habsburgs with their pompous lifestyle contributes to the fascination of this city. Or you can listen to the sounds of Viennese classical music. In addition, the Austrian capital can also inspire on a culinaric level: it is not for nothing that the famous Wiener Schnitzel and the Sachertorte could establish themselves almost everywhere in the world.

View of the Buda Castle and Chain Bridge over the Danube in Budapest at dusk, with the city in the background.

Budapest

On one bank of the Danube is hilly Buda with its Fisherman’s Bastion and Castle Hill; on the other, there’s flat Pest with its House of Parliament. These two beautiful districts couldn’t be more different. Perhaps that’s why it took until 1873 for the two cities on opposite sides of the river to merge and form Budapest.

View of Bratislava Castle on a wooded hill with a white A-ROSA river cruise ship on the Danube in the foreground

Bratislava

Slovakia’s capital is situated exactly at the point where the country meets Austria and Hungary. This makes it the only capital city in the world that borders more than one neighbouring country. Due to its location, Bratislava has been an ethnic melting pot since ancient times. This influence can be seen in every corner of the city.

Blick auf die Katarakten der Donau mit ruhigem, grünblauen Wasser, umgeben von tiefgrüner Vegetation und felsigen Ufern.

Cataracts

The Cataract Passage is probably the most impressive stretch on this Danube cruise in terms of scenery. It leads through deep gorges along steep cliffs. The “Iron Gate”, a Danube gorge that used to be considered dangerous, is particularly exciting. The worst thing you can do these days is not being quick enough to pull out your camera to capture beautiful photos.

Passau is the departure point for your exciting Danube cruise. A university city, it combines old-town charm and ecclesiastical history with a young, modern vibe. As the ship departs, enjoy the thrill of heading off along the Danube for the first time – and look forward to your cruise, with its many experiences, picturesque natural scenery and magnificent towns and cities. Welcome aboard!

Wachau

You are about to enjoy a real treat for the senses as you experience the Wachau up close. You will be mesmerised by the famous Danube valley between Melk and Krems. Taking in this fascinating river landscape as you stand on the sun deck of one of the A-ROSA Danube fleet is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is no wonder that the Wachau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This really is an absolute must-see.

Vienna

Arr 02:30 pm

This is a real highlight of your Danube cruise: Vienna, the capital of Austria with that extra-special something. The locals sound as though they are singing when they speak, and it is customary for certain business owners to address their regular customers with their full title. That’s just the way things are done here. With its wealth of museums, galleries, palaces and castles, plus the state opera and many theatres, the city enjoys a lively cultural scene all year-round. The Viennese are proud of their city – and rightly so!

Thanks to the mild climate and the southern slope of the Mecsek mountain range, almonds, figs and sweet grapes grow perfectly in the region around Pécs, earning it the moniker in Hungary, The Mediterranean City. Pécs is also known for its fine porcelain, which is produced in the traditional Zsolnay factory. In 2010, Pécs was one of the European Capitals of Culture and awaits you with interesting sights and an elegant city centre. With this many assets, it is not surprising that even the great religions settled here and made their mark on the city’s architecture: the former Turkish mosque is the largest in Central Europe, the magnificent cathedral is home to a stunning panelled ceiling and the synagogue is one of the most beautiful in Hungary.

Belgrade is a well-kept secret among Europe’s many metropolises. The capital of the Republic of Serbia, it is the country’s political, cultural and economic centre. It has a population of around 1.7 million, making it the country’s most populous city too. Belgrade’s location makes it a hub for travel between central and south-eastern Europe. You will be richly rewarded for the ascent to the imposing Belgrade fortress: from up here, a panoramic view of the city unfolds beneath you - including sweeping vistas of the impressive meeting place of the Save and Danube rivers. The beautiful Kalemegdan Park around the fortress is one of Belgrade’s popular boulevards. And the city offers so much more: the Serbian-Orthodox cathedral with its wide, green domes, the Patriarchal Palace and the Square of the Republic with its National Theatre and National Museum. Not far from Belgrade on the slopes of the Fruska Gora National Park along the Danube lies the picturesque town of Sremski Karlovci - known as Karlowitz. Sremski Karlovci is a place with an extraordinary cultural heritage. Among other things, the peace treaty between the Holy Roman Empire and the Ottoman Empire was signed here in 1699. After a walk through Sremski Karlovci, you visit the museum of beekeeping and a wine cellar that is over 300 years old, where you learn all about Serbian wine making and, of course, taste Serbian wines. Traditionally, you also taste honey and liquor before heading back to the ship.

Topola once played a key role in the history of Serbia, since it was here that the First Serbian Uprising took place between 1804 and 1813. Saint George’s Church stands on Oplenac Hill near Topola. This white marble edifice was founded by King Peter I of Serbia and is the resting place of a great many members of the Serbian – and later Yugoslavian – royal family. The numerous mosaics that adorn the church’s interior are a must-see. Once you have visited the church, you’ll continue on to King Peter I’s former home, which now houses an exhibition about the royal family. After you’ve been inside and then taken a short break for refreshments, you’ll head back to Belgrade.

The most impressive and well-known river gorge in Europe is the over 100 km long stretch of rapids with the famous Iron Gate, marking the border between Serbia on the right bank and Romania on the left bank of the Danube. The Danube winds its way through the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains here, passing through sections of up to 300 meters high cliffs. This renowned stretch along the river is a highlight of a Danube River cruise.

Novi Sad

Arr 08:00 am Dep 08:00 pm

The capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina makes quite an impression, with the mighty Petrovaradin fortress occupying the right bank of the Danube and the picturesque old town of Novi Sad standing atop the left bank. With around 220,000 inhabitants, it is Serbia’s second-largest city. Tourists are captivated by the old town – which looks as though it could almost be Italian. Will it cast a spell on you too? During this Danube cruise, you’ll have the chance to find out.

The mighty fortress of Novi Sad is very reminiscent of French fortresses: they served as a model for this former bastion against the Ottoman Empire. After the first leg of our bike tour you will also be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Danube here. You will then continue through the extensive city park, along the Serbian-Orthodox church with its magnificent baroque tower and on to the elegant neo-Renaissance-style pedestrian zone.

First of all, you’ll travel into Novi Sad’s old town by bus. On a walk through its handsome streets, you’ll find that you can’t help but think of the opulent Habsburg era. The old town is very different to the outskirts that you will have just passed through. The centre is characterised by narrow lanes lined with colourful houses, and you’ll see grand churches everywhere you look. After enjoying some free time, you’ll return to the ship.
