Rhine New Year's City Experience 2025

Highlights of the Rhine New Year's City Experience

Happy New Year in Holland & Belgium!

From Cologne to Amsterdam (Lelystad*), Antwerp, Dordrecht and Nijmegen to Cologne.

Celebrate New Year's Eve in the Netherlands! Party in the countries most futuristic city: Rotterdam. It is guaranteed to raise your spirits. Fireworks light up the sky and are reflected in the canals below. The colourful, narrow merchants’ houses, all of which seem to mock the invention of the spirit level, are irresistible, as are the Netherlands locals, who are always ready to party. But this cruise has even more to offer: Rubens fans will be in their element in the artist’s home town of Antwerp. Antwerp is also the home of the diamond trade. Indeed, diamonds provided the city with the wealth that keeps it looking magnificent. Followed by Dordrecht, which is another feast for the eyes. The city is located right at the waterfront and offers impressive architectural monuments and charming little harbours in the middle of town. This is just how a new year should start: with a wealth of completely new experiences. Gelukkig nieuwjaar!

Cologne

There are many things to see in Cologne, and they are all overshadowed by the cathedral. At 144.5 metres long and 157.38 metres high, this is the third-highest church building in the world. The view over Cologne, the Rhine and the surrounding areas makes climbing the south tower’s 533 steps well worth the effort. The basilica of Great St Martin Church is another fantastic sight. The brightly coloured houses of Cologne’s fish market seem to glow in front of it. Located away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, you can soak up the atmosphere of the old town here. And end the year with exploring the many faces of Cologne.

Antwerp

When your Rhine cruise calls at Antwerp, you’ll quickly realise that this small Flemish port is no stranger to festive sparkle. In fact, sparkle was virtually invented there: this time-honoured commercial city is a major diamond centre, where precious stones are polished until they twinkle like stars. Antwerp itself is also a jewel – from the ship, you’ll have a wonderful view of its grand houses with their decorated stepped gables.

Evening city view of Amsterdam with historic buildings, illuminated streets, and a dramatic sky with clouds.

Amsterdam

The lively ringing of bicycles welcomes the new year in Amsterdam. The popular means of transportation is the most flexible way to get to know all the exciting corners here. Always riding along the historic canals, you can see the countless boats and wonderful old merchants' houses. There are also a lot of small stores where you can find special souvenirs. How about a stroll through the nine-street district? Or a visit to one of the city's many museums? How you start the new year is entirely up to you.

We will set off on our exciting Rhine cruise from here, heading for the northern or the southern Rhine. But you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to explore this cathedral city, with its wealth of monuments and attractions. The best way is to arrive the day before your cruise departs, so that you can relax – or simply extend your stay in Cologne after the cruise has ended.

A woman sits relaxed with a glass of water in her hand in a cabin on a river cruise ship in front of the French balcony and looks out at the Danube through the open door.

Amsterdam is an incredibly varied city. It’s old yet modern, relaxed yet bustling, and arty while also being commercial. With almost 7,500 listed buildings, it has the highest concentration of historical monuments in the whole country. When your Rhine cruise calls at Amsterdam, you’ll be able to discover a piece of history around every corner.

*In individual cases, the local authorities in Amsterdam may not confirm the reserved berths. If no berth is allocated, our guests will be provided with a shuttle bus to Amsterdam.

Haarlem was once a very powerful, rich city and is even older than Amsterdam. Haarlem was mentioned in documents as early as the 10th century. Shipbuilding and beer brewing ensured prosperity, and in the Golden Age cloth weaving was added. You will discover the Grote Markt, where Haarlem's long history is as tangible as its liveliness, old rows of houses, the massive Gothic Grote Kerk, the Renaissance town hall and the "hofjes". Afterwards you have time for your own explorations: you could stroll for hours through the little streets... it is not for no reason considered the cosiest shopping place in Holland.

The Romans astutely identified the ideal location along the Rhine River nearly 2,000 years ago, laying the foundation for the oldest city in the Netherlands. Today, this Hanseatic city captivates visitors with its rich historical sites and the vibrant energy brought by its thriving student population. Nijmegen's liveliness extends to its city beaches, where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of its unique surroundings.

Trips

The Hanseatic city of Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands. Its history goes back to Roman times. Later, the city repeatedly became the imperial residence (during the Carolingian period), as well as a part of the Hanseatic League. In 1678, the Treaty of Peace of Nijmegen between France and the Netherland was signed here. The central old town is especially worth a visit today. You will explore the old town during this guided city walk, where you will also see the St. Stevenskerk, the Belvedère, the Latijnse School and the Grote Markt.
