Rhône Route Panorama 2026

Highlights of the Rhone Cruises

Searched the Rhône, found peace.

From Lyon to Panoramic passage through Lyon's old town, Chalon-sur-Saône, Mâcon, Lyon, Viviers, Arles, Port St. Louis, Avignon and Tournon-sur-Rhône to Lyon.

Ancient ruins, wild horses and old men playing boules on the market squares. Many of the scenes you encounter on this trip look like they come from a picture book. It’s the same in the rustic, rural region of Burgundy, where the hillsides are covered in the most famous vines in the world, from Pinot Noir to Chablis. You will never tire of exploring the labyrinthine alleys of the medieval-Baroque-modern merchant city of Lyon. But you can certainly eat your fill because every corner of this city demonstrates why Lyon is known as “la ville de gueule”, or “the city of the mouth”. Then it’s time to lose yourself in picturesque Provence, where immediately even your own watch begins to slow down. Soak up the joie de vivre, the colours and the beauty of nature. And the fact that for once all of your holiday photos – even the ones you snapped with your mobile phone – could be published in a picture book.

Lyon

Every lovely Rhône cruise starts in Lyon – A-ROSA cruises do, at least. And there is good reason for this: Lyon is a wonderful, modern city with an impressive old town and top-notch cuisine. Lyon partly owes its great culinary reputation to the award-winning French chef Paul Bocuse, who chose it as the headquarters for his brasserie, restaurant and café empire. The city is known for its simple yet high-quality fare, which is based on regional products and which gave the city its nickname la ville de gueule (‘the city of the palate’).

Camargue

As we move closer to the Mediterranean, the scenery on this cruise starts to change, becoming wilder and more untamed. The Rhône begins to fragment here, carrying along some 20 million tonnes of stones, sand and clay with it every year and washing it all into the Mediterranean. The Rhône Delta is known for its black bulls, white horses and pink flamingos – you can watch the latter between the salt marshes and rice paddies, filtering water through their bills to extract plankton. This marshland is unique in France and covers 120,000 hectares. Most of the area was granted national park status in 1970. Don’t miss the small town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, with its ninth-century fortified church.

Avignon

You’ve probably heard of the famous bridge in the song ‘Sur le pont d’Avignon’. This bridge actually exists, or at least part of it does: wars and floods reduced the bridge’s original 22 arches to 4. In 1660, after yet another flood, the bridge was abandoned. Aside from the bridge, you’re likely to be most delighted by Avignon’s palaces, wines and culture. The Papal Palace is monumentally impressive, particularly in the evening when it is illuminated by a light show.

The city is famous for its rich culinary scene with traditional French cuisine and therefore a true paradise for gourmets. Its historic town centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to well-preserved Renaissance architecture, secret passageways called Traboules and magnificent squares. Arr 06:01 pm

Your idyllic Rhône cruise will now call at Chalon-sur-Saône. Its 80,000 inhabitants make it the second-largest city in Burgundy today. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the Saône region by bicycle or visit the city, with its many beautiful old townhouses and the Cathédrale Saint-Vincent, which is definitely worth seeing.

Trips

By walking, your path leads you through the beautiful Chalon-sur-Saône. There was already a settlement in ancient times, founded by Emperor Caesar. In the Middle Ages, Chalon-sur-Saône was the most important and attractive town in Gaul. Nowadays, Chalon is known as the birthplace of photography. On your way through the well-preserved old town, you will discover the cathedral of St. Vincent from the 12th to the 15th century. Continue your stroll along the Saône river back to the ship.

Powerful dukes such as Philip the Bold supported the arts by acting as patrons – and their generosity is still evident in many places today. After enjoying some free time, you’ll return to the ship.
