Excursions and Sightseeing in Avignon
PALACE OF THE POPES
The impressive Gothic building dates back to the time when Avignon was the center of Christianity. Not only from the outside the imposing building looks like a fortress, also a visit to the interior is worthwhile. Several halls, including the grand audience hall, the consortium, and impressive state rooms, are open for exploration. The construction of the building was completed in under 20 years, in which nine popes later lived in succession. Visitors can also tour private quarters of the Pope, like the Pope's bedroom.
PONT SAINT-BÉNÉZET
The famous bridge was once the only crossing over the Rhône, on which the river cruises of A-ROSA take place today. After the bridge collapsed multiple times due to flooding, the decision was made in 1669 not to reconstruct it. Consequently, the bridge now terminates in the middle of the Rhône. Nevertheless, four of its arches remain intact, rendering the structure a truly unique attraction.
JARDIN DES DOMS
Avignon's city park is ideal for a pleasant stroll. Even the locals appreciate the value of this oasis and take advantage of its picturesque surroundings for relaxation. Visitors, too, can relish the magnificent view of Mont Ventoux and the Rhone Valley from the esplanade.
VILLENEUVE-LÈS-AVIGNON
On the other side of the Rhône River lies the medieval village of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Within, you can marvel at an impressive fortress situated on Mont Andaon. You can also visit the Carthusian monastery founded by Pope Innocent VI in the heart of the village.
