Highlights of the Main River Cruise

The most romantic river cruise on the Main.

From Frankfurt to Wertheim, Würzburg and Miltenberg to Frankfurt.

This romantic journey along the river Main offers the perfect opportunity to discover picturesque towns while having time to shop and relax. We start in Frankfurt with the lively atmosphere of the city centre and exclusive boutiques on the Zeil. In Wertheim, the northernmost Franconian town in Baden-Württemberg, we immerse ourselves in the historic old town. Würzburg is famous for its baroque and rococo-style buildings, especially the 18th-century Würzburg Residence with its magnificent rooms, a large fresco by the Venetian artist Tiepolo and a richly decorated staircase. With its numerous wine taverns, wine cellars and wineries as well as the characteristic Bocksbeutel, Würzburg is the heart of the Franconian wine region. Another gem on the Main is Miltenberg, where you can browse through the picturesque alleyways and sample local specialities. Relax on a walk along the riverbank and enjoy the romantic atmosphere along the Main.

Wertheim

With its well-preserved city wall, narrow alleyways, richly decorated half-timbered houses and picturesque market square, Wertheim offers a fairly authentic old Franconian image. The ruins of the castle sitting high above the town are one of the largest in Germany. Karl Baedeker described Wertheim as the most beautiful point of the entire journey in his description of the Main in 1862. Come and see for yourself on your Rhine cruise!

Würzburg

The wine in Würzburg really is excellent. Situated in a basin, Würzburg could be described as the young old city. Its 1,400 years of history can be seen in the cityscape. The Würzburg Residence, for example, is one of the most important buildings of the late Baroque period, and the Hall of Mirrors is considered to be the most perfect rococo work of spatial art. The city is also youthful because of the many students who have brought cafés, bars, modern culture and concerts with them. And the "party cellars" - a special feature of Würzburg's nightlife.

Frankfurt

"Here I am human, here I am entitled to be." This quote from Frankfurt's most famous son - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - actually comes from his "Faust", but it also applies wonderfully to his home city. You will find modern financial buildings stretching high into the sky as well as an old town with historic buildings and half-timbered houses. And if you simply want to unwind on this river cruise, take a long walk along the beautiful banks of the Main.

With its well-preserved city wall, narrow alleyways, richly decorated half-timbered houses and picturesque market square, Wertheim is quaint and relatively authentic. The ruined castle, perched on a hill, is one of the largest of its kind in Germany. In his 1862 account of the Main region, Karl Baedeker describes Wertheim as the high point of the entire trip. You can put this claim to the test yourself during your Rhine cruise.

Today your romantic river cruise will stop off in Würzburg. This old seat of bishops straddles the River Main. As a university city, Würzburg has an excellent reputation. A centre of Franconian winemaking, it is also the economic hub of Lower Franconia. The city is dominated by its medieval fortress, the Marienberg. A varied visit awaits you here!

Militenberg is a small village in the heart of Bavaria, nestled in the picturesque landscape of the Bavarian Alpine foothills. Known for its historical significance in a military context, the name "Militenberg" reflects the former strategic relevance of this region. The surrounding area is characterised by rolling hills, green forests and idyllic valleys that appeal to hikers and nature lovers alike. The charming village proudly preserves its cultural heritage, which is closely linked to the history of the military, and invites visitors to immerse themselves in the past and experience the unique atmosphere of this region.

Welcome to Goethe’s birthplace! Here’s another historical fact while we’re at it: this is where the first German national assembly met in 1848. Today, the metropolis on the Main is home to the headquarters of major banks and is also one of Germany’s most important centres of business and commerce. Frankfurt is also known for its many futuristic-looking high-rises. You’ll get a closer view of them when your Rhine cruise takes you along the Main river.
