The voyage continues to Mainz, where Roman history meets vibrant culture and cosy old town streets. The passage at the legendary Loreley is a moment not to be missed. Its magnificent rockface and legendary tales create a truly magical atmosphere. Enjoy comfort, culinary delights and breathtaking views that make this journey a dream come true.

Frankfurt

‘Hier bin ich Mensch, hier darf ich’s sein’ (‘Here I am man, dare man to be’). This quote by Frankfurt’s most famous son – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe – actually comes from his play ‘Faust’ (and the English translation by Bayard Taylor), but it is also a very fitting way to describe Goethe’s hometown. Frankfurt’s combination of modern skyscrapers housing major finance companies and the old town with its historic buildings and half-timbered houses is unique. And if you fancy a break from the hustle and bustle, you can take a leisurely walk along the lovely bank of the Main.

Wertheim

With its well-preserved city wall, narrow alleyways, richly decorated half-timbered houses and picturesque market square, Wertheim offers a fairly authentic old Franconian image. The ruins of the castle sitting high above the town are one of the largest in Germany. Karl Baedeker described Wertheim as the most beautiful point of the entire journey in his description of the Main in 1862. Come and see for yourself on your Rhine cruise!

Aschaffenburg

Aschaffenburg shines with its fascinating blend of history, culture and scenic beauty. Immerse yourself in the majestic world of Johannisburg Palace, one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Germany, and explore its magnificent rooms and gardens. Stroll through the picturesque old town with its charming half-timbered houses and historic squares before making your way to the Pompejanum, a replica of a Roman villa that offers a fascinating insight into ancient life.

Itinerary

Here is where we embark on our exciting Main cruise. You should definitely get to know the city of Frankfurt with its many monuments and attractions. The best way to do this is to arrive one day before your cruise or simply extend your stay after the cruise.

Militenberg is a small village in the heart of Bavaria, nestled in the picturesque landscape of the Bavarian Alpine foothills. Known for its historical significance in a military context, the name "Militenberg" reflects the former strategic relevance of this region. The surrounding area is characterised by rolling hills, green forests and idyllic valleys that appeal to hikers and nature lovers alike. The charming village proudly preserves its cultural heritage, which is closely linked to the history of the military, and invites visitors to immerse themselves in the past and experience the unique atmosphere of this region.

The charmingly picturesque town of Karlstadt is nestled on the banks of the Main River and charms its visitors with a well-preserved historic old town full of half-timbered houses and winding alleyways. Be sure to visit the impressive city gates and the nearby vineyards, which are ideal for relaxing walks and wine tastings. Culture, nature, and Franconian hospitality come together to create an unforgettable experience for every visitor.

Würzburg is the home of one of Germany’s oldest universities. Situated right on the Main river, the city is dominated by the Marienberg fortress. Previously used to house bishops, the fortress has two museums in it today. The Würzburg Residence is one of the most important buildings of its kind from the late baroque period, and the Mirror Cabinet – a room inside – is considered the best example of a rococo interior.

One last morning stroll through Würzburg, then our cruise continues to Wertheim.

With its well-preserved city wall, narrow alleyways, richly decorated half-timbered houses and picturesque market square, Wertheim is quaint and relatively authentic. The ruined castle, perched on a hill, is one of the largest of its kind in Germany. In his 1862 account of the Main region, Karl Baedeker describes Wertheim as the high point of the entire trip. You can put this claim to the test yourself during your Rhine cruise.

Aschaffenburg offers its visitors a wide range of experiences and sights. From historic buildings to idyllic nature parks, there is something for everyone to discover here. An absolute highlight is Johannisburg Castle - an imposing Renaissance palace. From its towers, you enjoy a breathtaking view over the old town and the River Main.

Mainz

Arr 08:00 am Dep 01:00 pm

Mainz is known for its cheerful atmosphere and its hospitality. Why not go for a stroll along the tranquil riverbank or enjoy a good glass of local wine while you’re there? You could also visit the city’s main landmark: Saint Martin’s Cathedral. It boasts one of the richest church interiors in the Christian world. With 2,000 years of history, Mainz is not just one of the oldest cities in Germany – it is also a place where you can see history come alive wherever you turn.

Rüdesheim

Arr 03:00 pm Dep 10:00 pm

In the Upper Middle Rhine Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the town of Rüdesheim marks the end of several old merchants’ routes. This strategically important point used to be protected by four castles. Picturesque Rüdesheim is known all around the world for its outstanding wines. Drosselgasse, an alleyway with half-timbered facades, is known as ‘The World’s Longest Wine Bar‘ and is reputed to be the most-visited tourist attraction in Germany after Cologne Cathedral. If you want to sample the local wines, head to the rustic wine taverns in the old town.

Boppard

Arr 02:00 am Dep 12:00 pm

The imperial town of Boppard is located close to the narrow horseshoe bend of the Rhine. In the 4th century the Romans replaced their citadel by a stone fortress with 28 towers, which however was soon overrun by Germanic tribes. The former free imperial city was subjugated in 1327 by the elector Balduin von Trier. Balduin immediately had the electoral Trier castle built, thereby forcing the uncooperative inhabitants to accept his rule.

Loreley Valley

Arr 01:30 pm Dep 02:00 pm

The Loreley Passage is a paradisiacal route along the Rhine known for its breathtaking landscapes and cultural significance. Along this passage, steep cliffs and dense forests stretch while the river flows calmly. Legend has it that the Loreley, a beautiful nymph, once sat on the rocks and lured sailors to their doom with her singing - a myth that continues to captivate the imagination of visitors to this day.
