Highlights of the Rhine Cruise

City holiday with country romance.

From Cologne to Cochem, Trier-Mehring, Bernkastel-Kues, Koblenz, Nijmegen, Amsterdam (Lelystad*), Rotterdam and Emmerich to Cologne.

Sometimes you fancy an exciting trip that takes you from city to city. Other times, you might feel like a relaxing holiday with plenty of nature. What if you want to combine the two? Then visit the Rhine. You’ll be waving goodbye to Cologne Cathedral one minute, and not long afterwards you’ll find yourself saying hello to the EYE film museum in Amsterdam’s harbour. The ship will be moored directly behind the main train station – the ideal starting point for discovering this city of canals. If you fancy experiencing its multicultural side with all your senses, be sure to sample the international cuisine for which Amsterdam is so famous. Rotterdam is a truly impressive sight, with its contemporary architecture and its enormous harbour, which receives goods from all corners of the earth. You’ll then head for Antwerp. Its glittering history as a diamond centre still permeates the city today. A short detour to Cochem will reveal the romance of the Moselle valley, and on the way back, you’ll be captivated by the castles of Bernkastel-Kues. Trier is a wonderful place to go hiking. If you’d like to see the Rhine from above again, the best way is to take the cable car in Koblenz, which sweeps you across to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. It’s the perfect place to enjoy great views across the city – and look back on an unforgettable cruise.

Rotterdam

Netherland's second largest city. The home of the continent's biggest sea port is a thriving metropolis that doesn’t scrimp on modern buildings or international flair. Over the past 20 years, a number of impressive new skyscrapers have sprung up – and there’s no sign of this trend stopping yet.

Cochem

Even though it is Germany's second-smallest district administrative centre, Cochem can look back on a long history, witnessed by its majestic Imperial Castle and the ruins of the Winneburg, each of which overlooks the town from its own small hill. Cochem is also home to the Pestkapelle (Plague Chapel) and the Kapelle zu den drei Kreuzen (Chapel of the Three Crosses). While these two places of worship are by no means huge, their understated elegance and beautiful location make them well worth a visit.

The Rhine really starts to make a scene in the Middle Rhine Valley – and it's little wonder, seeing as in Koblenz, the Moselle pumps in an extra 315 m3 of water per second. And then the rocks close ranks, and the riverbed narrows by almost two-thirds. Up above, the legendary Lorelei has been impassively watching this natural drama since time immemorial.

Here is where we embark on our exciting Rhine cruise. You should definitely get to know the city of Cologne with its many monuments and attractions. The best way to do this is to arrive one day before your cruise or simply extend your stay after the cruise.

Cochem, on the bank of the Moselle, is another port of call on your Rhine cruise, which will take you onto the Moselle. The entire Moselle region around Cochem is a real sight to behold. The town’s landmark is undoubtedly the famous Reichsburg, a splendid castle that towers above the river. But did you know that the West German government had a secret bunker built here for its federal bank? Strange, but true! And you’ll have the opportunity to visit it during your river cruise.

Trier lies right in the Moselle valley, a region characterised by the typical Moselle vineyards. The city boasts many churches, castles and palaces, plus a wealth of historic monuments – with UNESCO World Heritage status. Enjoy your time in the city, explore the Moselle valley and learn about the history of Rhineland-Palatinate. And as another lovely day draws to a close, you can look forward to the next picturesque port of call.

Experience the unforgettable atmosphere of a picturesque old town full of history and culture, as your Rhine cruise takes you along the Moselle. Enjoy award-winning wines from well-known sites – whether in one of the cosy wine bars, in a rustic wine tavern during a wine-tasting session with a winemaker, or during a tour of the steep vineyard slopes.

View across the river to the Thanisch vineyard in Bernkastel-Kues, surrounded by vineyards and trees.

Discover Koblenz during your Rhine cruise. Its history dates back over 2,000 years, making it one of Germany’s oldest cities – and one of its most picturesque, with a wealth of sights and cultural attractions. Marvel at Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, grand townhouses, narrow lanes and romantic corners. And watch as our A-ROSA ship sails close to the famous Deutsches Eck headland.

The Romans astutely identified the ideal location along the Rhine River nearly 2,000 years ago, laying the foundation for the oldest city in the Netherlands. Today, this Hanseatic city captivates visitors with its rich historical sites and the vibrant energy brought by its thriving student population. Nijmegen's liveliness extends to its city beaches, where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of its unique surroundings.

Amsterdam is an incredibly varied city. It’s old yet modern, relaxed yet bustling, and arty while also being commercial. With almost 7,500 listed buildings, it has the highest concentration of historical monuments in the whole country. When your Rhine cruise calls at Amsterdam, you’ll be able to discover a piece of history around every corner.

*In individual cases, the local authorities in Amsterdam may not confirm the reserved berths. If no berth is allocated, our guests will be provided with a shuttle bus to Amsterdam.

Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam. Known as ‘Manhattan on the Maas’, it has a more urban, international atmosphere than anywhere else in the whole country. In recent years, Rotterdam has become a centre for architecture – its large architect-designed houses testament to the city’s modernity. With a little luck, you’ll see other cruise ships during your day in Rotterdam, since Europe’s largest maritime port is a major transport hub.

The small beautiful town of Emmerich on the lower Lower Rhine gives you a nice time out on land during your cruise. Here you can take a stroll along the promenade and enjoy the magnificent view of the Rhine while discovering the "Golden Gate Bridge of the Lower Rhine", a suspension bridge spanning over the Rhine, which, just like its role model, can be seen from afar in vibrant red. Definitely worth taking a souvenir photo!

After an exciting cruise on the Rhine, you will be docking back in Cologne today. However, before you set off on your journey home with a thousand memories of your trip, why not use the day to explore North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Cologne? The imposing cathedral of Cologne is a must-see. See you soon and ahoy!
