Highlights of the Rhine River Cruise

Where the Rhine tells tales of legends through the grapevines.

From Duisburg to Cologne, Koblenz, Rüdesheim, Mainz and Andernach to Duisburg.

The A-ROSA SENA glides gently through the Middle Rhine Valley. Steep vineyards stretch along the slopes, castles watch over the river, and small villages cluster along the banks. With every bend in the river, a new view of this lush cultural landscape unfolds. In Koblenz, the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet at the Deutsches Eck. The vineyards of the Rheingau escort you to Rüdesheim, where you can take a seat in a wine bar and enjoy a glass of Riesling with a view of the grapevines. Mainz revels in its wine culture around the cathedral and market. Andernach, with its basalt walls and the highest cold-water geyser, is a reminder of its volcanic past. At the Loreley, the Rhine winds its way through one of its narrowest passages. From the deck, your gaze may wander upwards the slate rock cliffs that tells the legend of the mysterious woman atop. Between vines, rocks and historic banks, the Middle Rhine Valley unravels, inviting you to not only see, but also feel its beauty on your Rhine river cruise.

Mainz

Halfway between Lake Constance and the North Sea, the Rhine meets Mainz. This carnival city is known for its cheerful atmosphere and its hospitality. Why not go for a stroll along the tranquil riverbank or enjoy a good glass of local wine while you’re there? You could also visit the city’s main landmark: Saint Martin’s Cathedral. It boasts one of the richest church interiors in the Christian world. Another important building in Mainz is the Kurfürstliche Schloss (Electoral Palace). This is a prime example of the German Renaissance style of architecture.

Koblenz

When in Koblenz, don't miss the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress: This imposing fortress overlooks the Rhine and offers a magnificent panoramic view of the city and the river. Inside the fortress is the Koblenz State Museum and various exhibitions.

Ehrenfels Castle ruins on the Rhine, surrounded by autumnal vineyards and blue sky, overlooking the river and the town of Rüdesheim under clear skies.

Rüdesheim

The town describes its biggest attraction, the world-famous Drosselgasse, as ‘144 metres of joie de vivre’. This centre of Rhine Romanticism once inspired poets and musicians – it was here that Brahms composed his Symphony No. 3. Rüdesheim is the best-known spot in the Rheingau and has plenty of cultural attractions, including stately homes and fortifications. And no visit to the towns and countryside of this area of the Rhine would be complete without a Rüdesheim coffee, which was invented here.

Like Dortmund and Bochum, Duisburg became well known as a major location for the iron and steel industries. Nowadays, this city in the Ruhr region is a scientific hub and home to high-tech companies. Situated right on the Rhine, Duisburg is also one of the world’s most important inland ports.

Welcome to Cologne! The grand Cologne Cathedral, one of Germany's most famous landmarks, thrones majestically over the city and draws everyone's attention with its impressive architecture and ornate details. Along the riverside promenade, cosy cafés, lively beer gardens and restaurants invite you to linger and enjoy, while the charming old town streets with their traditional houses, boutiques and breweries convey the flair of centuries past.

Mainz bleibt Mainz (or ‘Mainz is always Mainz’) is more than a carnival motto. It is an expression of the easy-going way of life that makes the locals proud of their city, makes it easy for non-locals to settle in and helps visitors to enjoy their stay here. With over 2,000 years of history, Mainz is not just one of the oldest cities in Germany – it is also a place where you can see history come alive wherever you turn.
