Highlights of the Rhone Cruise

The best holidays are when you meet nice people – and yourself.

From Lyon to Panoramic passage through Lyon's old town, Viviers, Arles, Avignon and Vienne to Lyon.

The perfect setting for a rendezvous: a city full of winding lanes and Renaissance façades watched over by a lofty basilica. The Saône and the Rhône meet in Lyon before heading off on their honeymoon – to the Mediterranean, of course. You are welcome to join them. The sun sets into the river as you sip your Côte du Rhône. Medieval Viviers is waiting for you, as is the Ardèche, which brings a special element to the ambience: it has dug magical caves up to 300 m deep into the limestone. Above ground the halls of the monumental Papal Palace await you in magnificent Avignon, while in Arles you have your pick of sunny spots on romantic corners. But no fairy tale is complete without white horses. Voilà! Here they are: in the wild Camargue.

A couple stands in the old town of Avignon in front of a fence at a historic building. In the background, the sun is setting.

Avignon

You’ve probably heard of the famous bridge in the song ‘Sur le pont d’Avignon’. This bridge actually exists, or at least part of it does: wars and floods reduced the bridge’s original 22 arches to 4. In 1660, after yet another flood, the bridge was abandoned. Aside from the bridge, you’re likely to be most delighted by Avignon’s palaces, wines and culture. The Papal Palace is monumentally impressive, particularly in the evening when it is illuminated by a light show.

A vast lavender field in full bloom under a clear blue sky, with gentle hills and a village in the background.

Provence

Taken literally, savoir-vivre means ‘knowing how to live’. And living well is something that the people of Provence know a great deal about. Surrounded by gnarled olive trees, lilac-hued lavender fields and vineyards that produce the best red wines, it’s a place to relax and enjoy life. In the summer, you can watch one of the local farmers harvest fruit – and maybe lend a hand yourself. Perhaps you’ll even be rewarded with a glass of local wine or a dish of bouillabaisse. Other regional specialities include white nougat from Montélimar, candied fruits from the town of Apt and the famous truffles from the Vaucluse Mountains. Provence is a place where pleasure is a priority

A man stands on a historic wall in Arles and photographs something. In the background, the yellow buildings of the city.

Arles

The Night Cafe, Cafe Terrace at Night and Trinquetaille Bridgein Arles are just three of Van Gogh’s many works that portray Arles at its most beautiful. However, Van Gogh wasn’t the only big name who was fond of the city. During Roman times, there was already a flourishing metropolis on this spot. Constantine the Great made Arles his seat of government in the fourth century. Nowadays, the city is a blend of modern urban developments and historic monuments – and the inhabitants seem completely at ease living between the past and the present. This kind of laid-back attitude is a special feature of this cruise on the Saône and the Rhône.

And you will experience it first hand on this bus tour - with its flocks of flamingos and the famous white horses, the fauna is truly unique.
