Highlights of the Danube Cruise

Each bend in the river reveals a new world.

From Vienna to Esztergom, Budapest, Kalocsa, Mohács, Vukovar, Belgrade, Cataracts, Cruising Day, Novi Sad, Vukovar, Osijek, Cruising Day and Bratislava to Vienna.

Vienna is not just about Empress Sisi, the Cathedral and the Prater: there are numerous cozy shops, cafés and museums waiting to be discovered. As the ship approaches Esztergom and the imposing basilica rises above the river, this sight offers a first glimpse of the gorgeous vistas that the Danube has in store. Budapest, with its blend of art, culture and music, is the perfect place to revel in the moment while looking forward to what lies ahead. Vukovar, Novi Sad and Osijek demonstrate how diverse cultural influences along the Danube merge to form a rich and varied landscape. In Belgrade, follow the path up to the imposing fortress, guided by the scent of peach trees – and, of course, pljeskavica, a hearty dish served freshly in flatbread. The Carpathians are not far away now. Passing through the Iron Gate, your ship glides under the stern gaze of the 40-metre-high rock-carved portrait of the king who ruled here until 106 AD. Gliding across deep blue water through the steep cliffs of the mighty canyon, the cataract passage will take your breath away on your Danube cruise. Take in the picturesque diversity of the Danube, waiting to be discovered around every bend in the river.

Vienna

Once you've settled into Vienna for a few hours, you won't want to leave in a hurry. You want to visit the countless cafés, where the traditional Viennese coffee house culture is still lived today. And also the great history around the emperors, Sissi and the Habsburgs with their pompous lifestyle contributes to the fascination of this city. Or you can listen to the sounds of Viennese classical music. In addition, the Austrian capital can also inspire on a culinaric level: it is not for nothing that the famous Wiener Schnitzel and the Sachertorte could establish themselves almost everywhere in the world.

Budapest

On one bank of the Danube is hilly Buda with its Fisherman’s Bastion and Castle Hill; on the other, there’s flat Pest with its House of Parliament. These two beautiful districts couldn’t be more different. Perhaps that’s why it took until 1873 for the two cities on opposite sides of the river to merge and form Budapest.

Bratislava

Slovakia’s capital is situated exactly at the point where the country meets Austria and Hungary. This makes it the only capital city in the world that borders more than one neighbouring country. Due to its location, Bratislava has been an ethnic melting pot since ancient times. This influence can be seen in every corner of the city.

Cataracts

The Cataract Passage is probably the most impressive stretch on this Danube cruise in terms of scenery. It leads through deep gorges along steep cliffs. The “Iron Gate”, a Danube gorge that used to be considered dangerous, is particularly exciting. The worst thing you can do these days is not being quick enough to pull out your camera to capture beautiful photos.

Once the capital of Hungary, Esztergom sits right on the bank of the Danube and can be admired directly from the river. The castle tower and mighty basilica form an amazing sight, rising up from the steep bank of the Danube. This is a view you’ll definitely want to photograph during your Danube cruise. So, it’s a good thing that A-ROSA ships have such pleasant sun decks!

Budapest

Arr 04:00 pm

Do you know how many bridges Budapest has? There are seven in total – and they span the river between the neighbourhoods Buda and Pest. The most well known is probably the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Take a look at Budapest’s imposing structures for yourself as you cruise down the Danube. And if you go out onto the sun deck of your A-ROSA ship, you’ll also have an unobstructed view of Budapest’s famous parliament building. The perfect way to experience a stunning city.

From the Ringstrasse over the St Stephen's Cathedral to the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater, Vienna has plenty to offer for your second day. Visit a cosy coffee house and experience the true Viennese coffee culture. Schönbrunn Palace is also worth a visit. The beautiful baroque complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also boasts modern technology: an elaborate virtual reality film lets visitors relive the history of the palace.

Cataracts

The most impressive and well-known river gorge in Europe is the over 100 km long stretch of rapids with the famous Iron Gate, marking the border between Serbia on the right bank and Romania on the left bank of the Danube. The Danube winds its way through the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains here, passing through sections of up to 300 meters high cliffs. This renowned stretch along the river is a highlight of a Danube River cruise.
