“Iron Gates” is probably the most awe-inspiring gorge in Europe. In the past, this stretch of the Danube spelled disaster for many a ship. However, the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in 1971 resulted in a rise in the water level. This means that today we can enjoy the view of the huge canyon leading directly to “Romania’s answer to Norway”. The steep, green-covered cliffs of the Carpathian Mountains rise up to the left and right; the deep blue water flows below; and beyond every bend in the river there is another reason to take out your camera.
Around 80 kilometres west of Vienna is the Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This valley is lined with steep slopes on which some of Europe’s best grape varieties grow. Dürnstein's main sight is the church with its blue and white baroque spire. Artful reliefs show the suffering of Christ and four obelisks with the images of the apostles’ tower into the sky. The Collegiate Church was built in the 15th century and was originally an Augustinian monastery, before it was rebuilt in baroque style. The fortress, which towers over the city, was built in the middle of the 12th century and became the prison of King Richard I (Richard the Lionheart) about fifty years later. Linz has a long history. The capital of Upper Austria with its approx. 200,000 inhabitants is first mentioned in the second century as a Roman Lentia. The main square is surrounded by houses with baroque facades and beautiful Renaissance courtyards. Discover the town hall from the 15th century and the Feichtingerhaus from the 18th century. On your walk through Linz you will see the grand official Landhaus in Renaissance style as well as the Mozarthaus. The Old Cathedral, which was the Diocese of Linz' until 1909, was the work of the famous organist Anton Bruckner. Linz was the European Capital of Culture in 2009 - let yourself be inspired by this vibrant city.
