Danube New Year's 2026

Fireworks over the nighttime skyline of Vienna with illuminated historic buildings and a dark sky.

Highlights of the Danube Cruise

End the old year as the new one begins: with new prospects.

From Passau to Wachau, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Cruising Day to Passau.

Welcome the New Year in Budapest. Enjoy the fireworks from the ship or mingle with the locals and experience the evening in the city centre.  Showers of stars, fountains of fire, golden tails and explosions of colour. Budapest with its beautiful baroque buildings, the picturesque old town with small boutiques and cafés and the Danube in the middle, which invites you to a relaxed after-work drink, is reminiscent of the Seine metropolis Paris. Except that here the plaster crumbles from time to time and the metro bumps - but that doesn't bother anyone. This cruise is more than just one big New Year’s party. On the beautiful blue Danube you’ll also be amazed by the wonderful Vienna, enjoy Bratislava’s vitality and mixture of styles, pay homage to modern art in Linz, and take a little bit of the three-four rhythm back home with you in your blood.

View of the Danube riverbank in Bratislava at sunset with Bratislava Castle in the background, surrounded by trees and the city. In the foreground, the lights are reflected in the river.

Bratislava

Slovakia’s capital is situated exactly at the point where the country meets Austria and Hungary. This makes it the only capital city in the world that borders more than one neighbouring country. Due to its location, Bratislava has been an ethnic melting pot since ancient times. This influence can be seen in every corner of the city.

Budapest

Budapest's landmark is the Buda Castle. A monumental building that towers high above Budapest and offers a fantastic view over the city. And the Parliament building is in no way lagging behind the Castle Palace in terms of monumentality. This colossal building was constructed in just 22 years to mark the centenary of the city in 1896. In Budapest, you will repeatedly come across witnesses of days long past - you can find traces of Ottoman rule, the splendid Habsburg era or Soviet socialism. All these cultures have come together to create a colorful, lively city that you should definitely experience.

Vienna

Once you've settled into Vienna for a few hours, you won't want to leave in a hurry. You want to visit the countless cafés, where the traditional Viennese coffee house culture is still lived today. And also the great history around the emperors, Sissi and the Habsburgs with their pompous lifestyle contributes to the fascination of this city. Or you can listen to the sounds of Viennese classical music. In addition, the Austrian capital can also inspire on a culinaric level: it is not for nothing that the famous Wiener Schnitzel and the Sachertorte could establish themselves almost everywhere in the world.

Routenkarte Donau Silvester mit den Häfen Passau, Wien, Bratislava und Budapest.

Passau is the departure point for your exciting Danube cruise. A university city, it combines old-town charm and ecclesiastical history with a young, modern vibe. As the ship departs, enjoy the thrill of heading off along the Danube for the first time – and look forward to your cruise, with its many experiences, picturesque natural scenery and magnificent towns and cities. Welcome aboard!

A woman sits relaxed with a glass of water in her hand in a cabin on a river cruise ship in front of the French balcony and looks out at the Danube through the open door.

Wachau

You are about to enjoy a real treat for the senses as you experience the Wachau up close. You will be mesmerised by the famous Danube valley between Melk and Krems. Taking in this fascinating river landscape as you stand on the sun deck of one of the A-ROSA Danube fleet is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is no wonder that the Wachau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This really is an absolute must-see.

A mystical river landscape in the Wachau with hills on the riverbank. At the foot of the hill lies a village and at the top stands a castle. The sun shines over the hills onto the river.

Vienna

Arr 02:00 pm

This is a real highlight of your Danube cruise: Vienna, the capital of Austria with that extra-special something. The locals sound as though they are singing when they speak, and it is customary for certain business owners to address their regular customers with their full title. That’s just the way things are done here. With its wealth of museums, galleries, palaces and castles, plus the state opera and many theatres, the city enjoys a lively cultural scene all year-round. The Viennese are proud of their city – and rightly so!

Trips

On this tour, you will get to know Vienna's most historically significant sights. We will begin with a drive along the Ringstrasse with its magnificent buildings, such as the State Opera, the Museum of Art History and the Museum of Natural History, the Hofburg Palace, the Parliament Building, the city hall, the university, the stock exchange and past numerous palaces and monuments to famous composers, poets and artists. We will then continue to travel along the Prater with its famous Ferris Wheel to St. Charles's Church and the Viennese Music Association. One of Vienna’s landmarks can only be reached by foot due to its location – St. Stephen's Cathedral. After a brief tour of the outside, you will be taken back to your cruise ship.

From the Ringstrasse over the St Stephen's Cathedral to the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater, Vienna has plenty to offer for your second day. Visit a cosy coffee house and experience the true Viennese coffee culture. Schönbrunn Palace is also worth a visit. The beautiful baroque complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also boasts modern technology: an elaborate virtual reality film lets visitors relive the history of the palace.

The Hofburg in Vienna with its distinctive dome and many people on the square in front.

Bratislava, home to approximately 450,000 inhabitants and located on the left bank of the Danube, is a young capital city – the youngest in Europe, in fact. Throughout the old town, you’ll see traces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire wherever you go. This leisurely city of baroque and rococo, palaces and palisades, and art and coffee houses is a perfect place to wander around, marvel at impressive sights, relax and unwind.

Do you know how many bridges Budapest has? There are seven in total – and they span the river between the neighbourhoods Buda and Pest. The most well known is probably the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Take a look at Budapest’s imposing structures for yourself as you cruise down the Danube. And if you go out onto the sun deck of your A-ROSA ship, you’ll also have an unobstructed view of Budapest’s famous parliament building. The perfect way to experience a stunning city.

Come and discover even more of the Hungarian capital on your second day in Budapest. Discover the historic Fisherman's Bastion and enjoy a spectacular view of the city. The second largest city on the Danube is also home to the famous Gellért Baths. Here you can really unwind in a truly cosy atmosphere.
