Highlights of the Danube Cruise

A river as vast as its history.

From Vienna to Bratislava, Ilok, Belgrade, Vidin, Fetești, Rousse, Cruising Day, Cataracts, Turnu Severin, Novi Sad, Ilok, Cruising Day and Budapest to Vienna.

Hardly any other river has as many tales to tell as the Danube. Most people know it as a waterway. But what becomes clear as you follow its course is that this queen of rivers is home to the very essence of European heritage. Its banks are lined with architectural grandeur and monuments of a vast history in cities such as Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade. The further the river flows, the more noticeably its landscape changes. In Vidin, Rousse and Novi Sad, you will discover unique regional traditions. In Fetesti, it becomes clear that the fabled Wallachia is not at the end of the world, but rather at the beginning of a remarkably unspoilt natural landscape. At the cataracts of the Iron Gate, striking narrow rock formations appear. Then the banks of the river open up again. The horizon widens until the Danube branches out into a network of waterways, reeds and vast skies in the delta, flowing into the Black Sea. The river becomes calmer and the landscape even more untouched. As you return home from your Danube cruise, you will have gained a completely new perspective on Europe.

Danube Delta

“Iron Gates” is probably the most awe-inspiring gorge in Europe. In the past, this stretch of the Danube spelled disaster for many a ship. However, the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in 1971 resulted in a rise in the water level. This means that today we can enjoy the view of the huge canyon leading directly to “Romania’s answer to Norway”. The steep, green-covered cliffs of the Carpathian Mountains rise up to the left and right; the deep blue water flows below; and beyond every bend in the river there is another reason to take out your camera.

Wachau

Around 80 kilometres west of Vienna is the Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This valley is lined with steep slopes on which some of Europe’s best grape varieties grow. In the midst of all this, you’ll keep spotting castles, palaces and Romantic ruins on the hills, which bear witness to a distant past. With such an enchanted landscape, it’s not surprising that there are many legends about the Wachau, dealing with both mythical phenomena and real-life events, including the Napoleonic Wars. Authors such as Josef Wichner and Hans Plöckinger published collections of these legends – the ideal thing to read while you are visiting the area.

Blick auf das Parlamentsgebäude von Budapest am Flussufer. Das Gebäude spiegelt sich in der Donau und ein Flussschiff ist im Vordergrund.

Budapest

On one bank of the Danube is hilly Buda with its Fisherman’s Bastion and Castle Hill; on the other, there’s flat Pest with its House of Parliament. These two beautiful districts couldn’t be more different. Perhaps that’s why it took until 1873 for the two cities on opposite sides of the river to merge and form Budapest.

Bratislava

Arr 11:00 pm

Bratislava, home to approximately 450,000 inhabitants and located on the left bank of the Danube, is a young capital city – the youngest in Europe, in fact. Throughout the old town, you’ll see traces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire wherever you go. This leisurely city of baroque and rococo, palaces and palisades, and art and coffee houses is a perfect place to wander around, marvel at impressive sights, relax and unwind.

Belgrade is a well-kept secret among Europe’s many metropolises. The capital of the Republic of Serbia, it is the country’s political, cultural and economic centre. It has a population of around 1.7 million, making it the country’s most populous city too. Belgrade’s location makes it a hub for travel between central and south-eastern Europe. During your Danube cruise, you’ll get to experience Belgrade up-close and enjoy this wonderfully varied city.

The illuminated Saint Sava Cathedral in Belgrade at night. In the foreground, fountains and lanterns adorn the entrance, and many people are sitting on the forecourt.

Right on the banks of the Danube lies the Bulgarian city of Vidin. The history of the city dates back to years before Christ. Perhaps the most famous landmark is the Baba Vida Fortress, the only fully preserved medieval fortress in Bulgaria.

Fetești, a charming town in Romania, will enchant you with its picturesque location on the banks of the Danube. The historic centre will captivate you with its well-preserved buildings from different eras and its picturesque cobbled streets.

A couple sits on a fountain in Bratislava, surrounded by trees and other people in the background.

The area around Fetești offers a wide range of outdoor activities, such as boat trips on the Danube and hikes in the surrounding countryside. Local markets and traditional restaurants invite you to experience authentic Romanian cuisine and hospitality.

Enjoy one last day in Fetești before continuing your cruise towards Rousse.

During your Danube Delta cruise, you’ll discover the beautiful port of Rousse. Many people consider this pearl of northern Bulgaria, nestled among the most varied landscapes of the eastern Danube plain, the country’s prettiest city. By the time you have taken a stroll along Ulitsa Aleksandrovska, between Rousse’s two main squares, you’ll probably feel the same. Enjoy your day in Bulgaria!

During your cruising day, enjoy watching the scenery drift by as you look forward to the next towns and cities. Our tip: the SPA-ROSA is a great place to unwind and pamper yourself during your day on the river.

Cataracts

The most impressive and well-known river gorge in Europe is the over 100 km long stretch of rapids with the famous Iron Gate, marking the border between Serbia on the right bank and Romania on the left bank of the Danube. The Danube winds its way through the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains here, passing through sections of up to 300 meters high cliffs. This renowned stretch along the river is a highlight of a Danube River cruise.

Turnu Severin

Arr 05:00 am Dep 12:00 pm

Right next to the breathtaking statue of Decebalus carved in stone and the magnificent little church of Mraconia located in the Danube Valley one will find the village of Turnu Severin. This tranquil little town perfectly reflects Romanian life. Take a stroll through the center and discover the historical water tower or the ancient relics from the Roman times, such as the Trajan's Bridge built in 102-105 AD.

Novi Sad

Arr 12:00 pm Dep 06:00 pm

The capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina makes quite an impression, with the mighty Petrovaradin fortress occupying the right bank of the Danube and the picturesque old town of Novi Sad standing atop the left bank. With around 220,000 inhabitants, it is Serbia’s second-largest city. Tourists are captivated by the old town – which looks as though it could almost be Italian. Will it cast a spell on you too? During this Danube cruise, you’ll have the chance to find out.

Do you know how many bridges Budapest has? There are seven in total – and they span the river between the neighbourhoods Buda and Pest. The most well known is probably the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Take a look at Budapest’s imposing structures for yourself as you cruise down the Danube. And if you go out onto the sun deck of your A-ROSA ship, you’ll also have an unobstructed view of Budapest’s famous parliament building. The perfect way to experience a stunning city.

A true highlight of your Danube cruise: Vienna, the capital of Austria with that extra-special something. The locals sound as though they are singing when they speak, and it is customary for certain business owners to address their regular customers with their full title. That’s just the way things are done here. With its wealth of museums, galleries, palaces and castles, plus the state opera and many theatres, the city enjoys a lively cultural scene all year-round. The Viennese are proud of their city – and rightly so!
