Highlights of the Rhine River Cruise, Moselle River Cruise

Discover the magic of the Rhine first hand!

From Cologne to Cochem, Boppard, Koblenz, Mainz, Frankfurt and Rüdesheim to Cologne.

With the best view of the Rhine, it is no wonder that the Lorelei is perched high up on a rock. Especially the Middle Rhine, with its castles, gorges, wine villages and more, is a feast for the eyes. The 'Rhine in Flames' event is a spectacular way to end your cruise. You can look forward to stunning fireworks over the Rhine, which make for an unforgettable experience.

Koblenz

Discover Koblenz during your Rhine cruise. Its history dates back over 2,000 years, making it one of Germany’s oldest cities – and one of its most picturesque, with a wealth of sights and cultural attractions. Marvel at Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, grand townhouses, narrow lanes and romantic corners. And watch as our A-ROSA ship sails close to the famous Deutsches Eck headland.

Rüdesheim

In the Upper Middle Rhine Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the town of Rüdesheim marks the end of several old merchants’ routes. This strategically important point used to be protected by four castles. Picturesque Rüdesheim is known all around the world for its outstanding wines. Make sure you take a walk through the charming little streets of the old town.

View from a park across the River Main to the Frankfurt skyline at sunset, with skyscrapers and a bridge.

Frankfurt

‘Hier bin ich Mensch, hier darf ich’s sein’ (‘Here I am man, dare man to be’). This quote by Frankfurt’s most famous son – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe – actually comes from his play Faust (and the English translation by Bayard Taylor), but it is also a very fitting way to describe Goethe’s hometown. Frankfurt’s combination of modern skyscrapers housing major finance companies and the old town with its historic buildings and half-timbered houses is unique. And if you fancy a break from the hustle and bustle, you can take a leisurely walk along the lovely bank of the Main.

Here is where we embark on our exciting Rhine cruise. You should definitely get to know the city of Cologne with its many monuments and attractions. The best way to do this is to arrive one day before your cruise or simply extend your stay after the cruise.

Panoramic view of the city of Cologne with the Cologne Cathedral at sunset. In the foreground, the Hohenzollern Bridge, which crosses the Rhine.

Cochem, on the bank of the Moselle, is another port of call on your Rhine cruise, which will take you onto the Moselle. The entire Moselle region around Cochem is a real sight to behold. The town’s landmark is undoubtedly the famous Reichsburg, a splendid castle that towers above the river. But did you know that the West German government had a secret bunker built here for its federal bank? Strange, but true! And you’ll have the opportunity to visit it during your river cruise.

The imperial town of Boppard is located close to the narrow horseshoe bend of the Rhine. In the 4th century the Romans replaced their citadel by a stone fortress with 28 towers, which however was soon overrun by Germanic tribes. The former free imperial city was subjugated in 1327 by the elector Balduin von Trier. Balduin immediately had the electoral Trier castle built, thereby forcing the uncooperative inhabitants to accept his rule.

The breath-taking cable car ride across the Rhine and up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress should not be missed: Behind you the roofs of Koblenz, below you the broad river and in front of you the gigantic fortress Ehrenbreitstein. This adjective is by no means an exaggeration, as you will be entering the second largest preserved fortress in Europe. Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III ordered the construction as part of an anti-French military line. Up to 6,500 craftsmen and day labourers were employed. The mighty fortress rises 118 metres above the Rhine and was once the core of the fortification around Koblenz. Together with the Deutsches Eck (German Corner), it forms the northern gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Afterwards we will walk through the old town back to the ship.

The town describes its biggest attraction, the world-famous Drosselgasse, as ‘144 metres of joie de vivre’. This centre of Rhine Romanticism once inspired poets and musicians – it was here that Brahms composed his Symphony No. 3. And no visit to the towns and countryside of this area of the Rhine would be complete without a Rüdesheim coffee, which was invented here.
