Highlights of the Rhine Cruise

To experience a little romance doesn't demand an eternity.

From Cologne to Rüdesheim, Frankfurt, Loreley Valley and Koblenz to Cologne.

A long time ago, the Middle Rhine Valley was the scene of dramas, battles and shipping disasters. All of this took place in the shadows of 40 castles, rocky mountains and dense forests. Today the wise old castles and even the legendary Lorelei look down peacefully at the mighty river, generously providing clicking smartphones with a majestic natural panorama. Ships are now able to safely pass by the craggy slate rocks before sailing on to colourful clusters of timber-framed dwellings, huge sandstone cathedrals and cool glasses of excellent wines to toast the Rhine’s beauty.

A telescope at a vantage point overlooking the city of Koblenz and the Deutsches Eck, a cable car travels over the river under a clear sky.

Koblenz

Discover Koblenz during your Rhine cruise. Its history dates back over 2,000 years, making it one of Germany’s oldest cities – and one of its most picturesque, with a wealth of sights and cultural attractions. Marvel at Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, grand townhouses, narrow lanes and romantic corners. And watch as our A-ROSA ship sails close to the famous Deutsches Eck headland.

Frankfurt

‘Hier bin ich Mensch, hier darf ich’s sein’ (‘Here I am man, dare man to be’). This quote by Frankfurt’s most famous son – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe – actually comes from his play Faust (and the English translation by Bayard Taylor), but it is also a very fitting way to describe Goethe’s hometown. Frankfurt’s combination of modern skyscrapers housing major finance companies and the old town with its historic buildings and half-timbered houses is unique. And if you fancy a break from the hustle and bustle, you can take a leisurely walk along the lovely bank of the Main.

Cologne

Welcome to Cologne! The magnificent Cologne Cathedral, one of Germany's most famous landmarks, towers proudly over the city and attracts attention with its impressive architecture and ornate details. Cosy cafés, lively beer gardens and restaurants stretch along the waterfront inviting you to linger and enjoy, while the charming old town alleyways with their traditional houses, boutiques and breweries convey the flair of past centuries.

Route map Mini cruise Main & Loreley with the ports Cologne, Koblenz, Rüdesheim, and Frankfurt am Main.

Here is where we embark on our exciting Rhine cruise. You should definitely get to know the city of Cologne with its many monuments and attractions. The best way to do this is to arrive one day before your cruise or simply extend your stay after the cruise.

Panoramic view of the city of Cologne with the Cologne Cathedral at sunset. In the foreground, the Hohenzollern Bridge, which crosses the Rhine.

The town describes its biggest attraction, the world-famous Drosselgasse, as ‘144 metres of joie de vivre’. This centre of Rhine Romanticism once inspired poets and musicians – it was here that Brahms composed his Symphony No. 3. Rüdesheim is the best-known spot in the Rheingau and has plenty of cultural attractions, including stately homes and fortifications. And no visit to the towns and countryside of this area of the Rhine would be complete without a Rüdesheim coffee, which was invented here.

Trips

Let the Winzerexpress take you on a tour through vineyards and right into the centre of Rüdesheim. Here, the little lanes are too narrow for our trusty vehicle, so you’ll explore the old town on foot. You’ll find one of Germany’s most well-known streets here: Drosselgasse. Lined with wine taverns and bars with outdoor seating, it offers 144 metres of pure enjoyment. You’ll have the opportunity to stop off here to learn how the traditional coffee speciality ‘Rüdesheim coffee’ is made – and you’ll be able to try it for yourself, of course.
