Highlights of the Rhône River Cruise

Cast off for savoir vivre, art and life.

From Lyon to Viviers, Avignon, Arles, Port St. Louis and Tournon/ Tain-l'Hermitage to Lyon.

What is it that makes the south of France so special? So different from the other beautiful Mediterranean regions? Maybe it’s the fact that everything is a little more intense. The people, who are always so animated and open; the hard, angular dialect; the picturesque landscape with its dry red earth; the breathtaking ravines and even wild white horses. The mistral, which regularly blows stormily into your lungs. The wines are full-bodied and good. And then there’s the fantastic cuisine scented with herbs and olives, and the art, which positively hurls vibrant colours into the eye. The buildings play their part, too. Papal palaces, monasteries and castles, stony and awe-inspiring. The international jet set on the Côte d’Azur aren’t exactly known for understatement either. All of this is guaranteed to make you fall in love with the south of France – not just a little, but head over heels. And to have a holiday that is a little more intense. For all the senses.

As we move closer to the Mediterranean, the scenery on this cruise starts to change, becoming wilder and more untamed. The Rhône begins to fragment here, carrying along some 20 million tonnes of stones, sand and clay with it every year and washing it all into the Mediterranean. The Rhône Delta is known for its black bulls, white horses and pink flamingos – you can watch the latter between the salt marshes and rice paddies, filtering water through their bills to extract plankton. This marshland is unique in France and covers 120,000 hectares. Most of the area was granted national park status in 1970. Don’t miss the small town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, with its ninth-century fortified church.

Two men are looking into the interior of a Citroën vintage car in the old town of Arles, surrounded by historic buildings, as the sun slowly sets in the background.

Arles

The Night Cafe, Cafe Terrace at Night and Trinquetaille Bridgein Arles are just three of Van Gogh’s many works that portray Arles at its most beautiful. However, Van Gogh wasn’t the only big name who was fond of the city. During Roman times, there was already a flourishing metropolis on this spot. Constantine the Great made Arles his seat of government in the fourth century. Nowadays, the city is a blend of modern urban developments and historic monuments – and the inhabitants seem completely at ease living between the past and the present. This kind of laid-back attitude is a special feature of this cruise on the Saône and the Rhône.

Provence

Taken literally, savoir-vivre means ‘knowing how to live’. And living well is something that the people of Provence know a great deal about. Surrounded by gnarled olive trees, lilac-hued lavender fields and vineyards that produce the best red wines, it’s a place to relax and enjoy life. In the summer, you can watch one of the local farmers harvest fruit – and maybe lend a hand yourself. Perhaps you’ll even be rewarded with a glass of local wine or a dish of bouillabaisse. Other regional specialities include white nougat from Montélimar, candied fruits from the town of Apt and the famous truffles from the Vaucluse Mountains. Provence is a place where pleasure is a priority.

We recommend that you begin your excursion by sampling some delicious calissons d’Aix, local sweets made with almonds and melon. Preferably in one of the many cafés along the elegant Cours Mirabeau. Or you could follow in the footsteps of Paul Cézanne, the great Impressionist artist, who had a studio in Aix. Eine Vielzahl an verschiedenen Schimmelkäse in einem Marktstand in Lyon

Your unforgettable river cruise on the Rhône River comes to an end. Firstly, enjoy the lavish breakfast on board. Afterwards, you will certainly have another opportunity to catch a glimpse of the beautiful city of Lyon before setting off on your journey home. Homesickness for the A-ROSA ship and the Rhône River with its marvellous landscapes in France is not out of the question. See you soon and ahoy!

A church with a pointed tower, a bridge over the Rhône, and the surrounding old buildings are gently reflected in the calm river water of Lyon.
