Highlights of the Seine River Cruise

Paris is sparkling like the stars in the sky.

From Le Pecq / Paris to Rouen, Le Havre, Caudebec-en-Caux, Les Andelys, Vernon and La Roche-Guyon to Le Pecq / Paris.

The Eiffel Tower, the way of life or the art? You could argue for hours about what it is that makes Paris so special. But one thing everyone agrees on is that Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And when seen from the water, it’s even more beautiful. The banks of the Seine, the river’s many bridges and all the little stories about them are incredibly romantic. The Seine seems to have adopted the Parisians’ laissez-faire attitude to life as it gently flows towards Normandy. The landscape here – which was named after the “men of the North”, the Vikings, who landed here around 1,200 years ago – is extremely pretty. Blossoming meadows and dense forests guide the river towards Rouen, where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. The many artefacts documenting the 2,000-year history of this city are highly interesting. It’s easy to see why Normandy has been depicted in so many works of art. You too will reach for your camera more often than usual, regardless of whether you visit Claude Monet’s magical garden or the gorgeous Château Bizy, also known as “Little Versailles”. And everywhere you go, you’re tempted by culinary delights. In France, cheese is revered. Sample as much of it as you can, and find out why.

Paris

You don’t just visit Paris – you soak up the atmosphere. Splendid sights such as the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Élysées, the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe will captivate you, while twilight walks through the Marais and Montmartre are sure to inspire you. This is a place where time seems to stand still as you take in the city’s grand monuments.

Le Havre

Le Havre is where the Seine meets the sea – quite literally, since the area between Le Havre and Honfleur, on the other side of the Seine, is where you’ll find not only the Pont de Normandie bridge but also the final stretch of the Seine before it flows into the English Channel. The modern city of Le Havre was granted UNESCO World Heritage status for its completely reconstructed city centre, which was rebuilt after the war. One of its only remaining buildings from the Middle Ages is the Notre Dame Cathedral, which is a must-see.

Port of Caudebec-en-Caux with sailboats in front of historic multi-storey houses and bustling cafés on the waterfront

Caudebec-en-caux

Today, visitors to this small town are enchanted by the restaurants and cafes on the river’s promenade, from where you can watch the comings and goings on the Seine. The main attraction is the Notre Dame church, which shows what stonemasons in the Middle Ages were able to build out of sandstone. There are plenty of interesting excursion options here. Honfleur, an idyllic fishing town, has gorgeous little lanes and a picturesque old port quarter that has hardly changed since the 17th century. Even back then, the Seine functioned as France’s lifeline to culture and education.

Although Rouen was heavily damaged in the Second World War, most of its old half-timbered buildings, paved streets and churches were rebuilt. Today, Rouen will remind you of an open-air museum rather than a city. The city of the 100 church spires - as it was called by Victor Hugo - sadly gained notoriety in 1431 when Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in the middle of the market square. This excursion will first take us to Le Havre, famous for its architectural city centre, the only one from the 20th century that has been awarded the UNESCO World Heritage status. We will continue along the coast to one of the most beautiful seaside resorts on this stretch, the small village of Étretat, which is surrounded by high chalk cliffs on both sides. These also provide natural protection for the city from the dominant winds. Charming castles, manor houses - and of course the outstanding chalk cliffs, which have been captured in countless paintings by well-known painters, determine the cityscape.
