The best Sights and Destinations in Paris
EIFFEL TOWER
At 324 metres high, the Eiffel Tower is one of the best-known landmarks in Paris. The steel framework tower was constructed for the world’s fair on the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution and was opened on 31 March 1889. The vast structure impresses with its height and unusual shape, but the view from the Eiffel Tower itself is also breath-taking. Seen from above, Paris is at your feet, and you can enjoy a sweeping view over the city.
ARC DE TRIOMPHE
Along the impressive axe historique between the small arch at the Louvre and the large arch in the Défense district stands this 50-metre-high arch created by Jean François Chalgrin, who took inspiration from ancient models. Napoleon commissioned the building in 1806 to mark his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz, but it took 30 years to complete.
Louvre
The Louvre is one of the most famous art galleries in Europe and has already served as a spectacular film set many times. In the middle of the courtyard of the Palais du Louvre, there are five glass pyramids which offer a view into the entrance hall of the museum. The grand elegance of the buildings unfolds as soon as you enter the palace and the courtyard.
Montmartre
Explore Paris’ highest natural point of elevation. The hill of Montmartre can be reached via the famous steps or a funicular. From above, you can enjoy a wonderful view over the surrounding alleyways and houses. A particular highlight is the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. An impressive place that is definitely worth a visit.
NOTRE-DAME DE PARIS CATHEDRAL
Who doesn’t know it? The story of the bell-ringer – the hunchback – of Notre-Dame. Discover the cathedral and walk in the footsteps of the bell-ringer. The impressive architecture and ornamentation of the cathedral attract scores of guests every day. You will be amazed just upon entering the cathedral by the elaborately designed reliefs on the church’s porches. Notre-Dame de Paris was constructed between 1163 and 1345.
CATACOMBS OF PARIS
Delve into the underworld of Paris. The catacombs were constructed in old mines underneath the city. Up until the early 19th century, the catacombs were partially used as an ossuary.
