The lively Serbian capital serves the perfect blend of history, modernity and culture. The highlight of the city is the mighty Kalemegdan Fortress, originally built in the 15th century. The most impressive and well-known river gorge in Europe is the over 100 km long stretch of rapids with the famous Iron Gate, marking the border between Serbia on the right bank and Romania on the left bank of the Danube. The Danube winds its way through the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains here, passing through sections of up to 300 meters high cliffs. This renowned stretch along the river is a highlight of a Danube River cruise.
The capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina makes quite an impression, with the mighty Petrovaradin fortress occupying the right bank of the Danube and the picturesque old town of Novi Sad standing atop the left bank.
